Notebook: Bloomington South Holiday Classic
On Saturday, we went down south to take a look at the Bloomington South Holiday Classic. It was a small four-team event with a round-robin format, we saw Lowell play Marquette Catholic and Evansville Harrison play Bloomington South bringing together a couple top teams from the region and a solid Evansville-area group. Here is our breakdown of the day.
Lowell 70, Marquette Catholic 66
Lowell got out to an early lead in this one and despite a ton of runs from Marquette Catholic, they were never able overcome and Lowell was able to walk away with the win. Lowell really did well rebounding the ball and seemed to pick it up when they were making their runs. At the forefront of that was freshman Chris Mantis who was extremely good in this game going for 23 points on just 8/10 shooting. However, from the start it was senior forward Noah Durr that seemed to set the tone. His effort and energy was noticeable all game long.
For Marquette Catholic, they had some solid runs but they were unable to shoot the ball well from distance and with Lowell being so efficient, it was hard to keep pace. They were really good when they decided to go to the rim. Chandler Goodwin was really tough in the lane and showed some creativity. 20 points from Buddy Jaffe wasn’t enough in this one.
Top Performers:
Chris Mantis (L): 23 points (8/10 FG), 13 rebounds
Noah Durr (L): 21 points (7/11 FG), 3 rebounds
Buddy Jaffe (MC): 20 points (6/12 FG), 3 rebounds
Colin Kenny (MC): 16 points (7/16 FG), 1 rebound
Evansville Harrison 45, Bloomington South 60
On Saturday night, we saw Evansville Harrison come out firing as Robin Duncan had his shot falling early and Rilee Epley was dominating inside. Combine that with the face that Bloomington South couldn’t hit anything and Harrison got out to an early lead. However, that didn’t last for long as Bloomington South found their key senior in Chance Coyle who was dominant in the second half of the game.
Early on Robin Duncan was really productive, slashing into the lane and finishing with length and was able to knock down a couple long jumpers. Down the stretch though, Bloomington South’s defense was able to take that away right as Chance Coyle got hot. The Southern Indiana commit went 8/10 from the field and 5/7 from three.
Top Performers:
Chance Coyle (BS): 27 points (8/10 FG), 7 rebounds
Anthony Leal (BS): 16 points (5/8 FG), 3 rebounds
Robin Duncan (EH): 12 points (4/10 FG), 7 rebounds, 7 assists
