5 Takeaways from Warren Central vs. Cathedral
A matchup of undefeated teams took place at Cathedral Friday night as Warren Central came in looking to come away with a win. It was a battle of supremely athletic teams and Cathedral took a while to get started. Warren Central got out to an early lead and never looked back but Cathedral made a 12-0 run in the last minute to tie it and send it to overtime. In overtime, Warren Central mustered just enough to escape with the win 66-64. Here are the complete stats from the game: Warren Central vs. Cathedral
Warren Central will use their speed to run through teams this year
Warren Central is a really good team and they are supremely quick with the ball. They can create space and separation like no other team in the state and their guards can get up and down the floor with any group in the state. Their forwards are long and lanky which makes them even tougher to defend because they can help out in the open floor handing the ball as well.
Is Cathedral’s team chemistry where it needs to be to make a deep postseason run?
At this point in the season, it is not. A bit too much of 1-on-1 basketball and they aren’t passing it around as good as they could be. They made 20 baskets but only assisted on three of those. You could kind of just tell that everyone is still trying to find their way on this team. I do think by the end of the year they will be a big force in 4A basketball.
Who actually is Cathedral’s #1 option?
Their entire lineup can score the ball at a high clip. Armaan Franklin led the team on this night with 24 point and Jarron Coleman had 17. Justin Hensley had an off night but is one of the best corner shooters in the state. I don’t think they truly need a first scoring option as they all can score really well but if it were up to me, Coleman would have the ball in his hands the final possession.
The 5’8 guards can ball
Senior guards Dean Tate and Antwaan Cushingberry are the guys who set the pace for Warren Central and both are really good passers of the ball. Cushingberry had six assists and Tate added another. They both can play off the ball and their speed is really going to hurt opposing defenses this year with their combination of passing and scoring
Who will be the better team down the road?
Both of these teams are really good and are top teams in 4A this year and both could make deep postseason runs. Cathedral has more high-level players on their team this year but Warren Central is playing well as a team right now. Down the road, I expect Cathedral to come around and start playing as the team we think they can be.
