The Porter Gaud Cyclones traveled to Fayetteville, NC this past weekend to play in the Phenom Hoop Fest. The Cyclones started the weekend before in Arden, NC at the Prep Hoops Battle of the Carolinas hosted by Justin Byerly.
The Cyclones the 2-time SCISA 3-A State Champions played Village Christian (Fayetteville, NC) on Friday night. The Cyclones were down 34-23 at half time to Village Christian before coming back and forcing the game into overtime. The Cyclones would go and win 70-63.
Vanderbilt signee Aaron Nesmith led the way with 25 points, Yale bound Jake Lanford added 18 points and Josiah James (2019) chipped in with 11 points.
Travion McCray (2019) led the way for Village Christian with 15 points, Khuath Gatkuoth added 14 points and Derrick Quanset chipped in with 13 points.
McCray played last season at West Florence HS before transferring to Village Christian. McCray reclassified into the 2019 class while at Village Christian. McCray finished his career in the Palmetto State with 1,154 career points between Timmonsville HS and West Florence HS.
The Cyclones knocked off Piedmont Classical 64-48 to move to 4-0 on the young season. The Cyclones were led in scoring by Nesmith with 18 points, Lanford 14 points and Harrison Whatley added 9 points. The Cyclones return back home and play Wando HS on Tuesday over in Mount Pleasant.
Brian Free led Piedmont Classical with 18 points and Shakeel Moore (2019) added 10 points in the defeat.
York Prep suffered a setback to Northwood Temple at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge this weekend. Northwood Temple defeated York Prep 61-48.
Vince Cole (2018) led the way for York Prep with 17 points in the loss. DJ Burns (2019) added 9 points while Savion Dawkins (2018) chipped in with 6 points. Dawkins played last season at Blythewood HS.
North Carolina State signee Ian Steere led Northwood Temple with 21 points while John Michael Wright added 13 points for the Eagles.
