Prospect Spotlight: Przemek Golek (2019)
After a successful season in Canada, Przemek Golek has made a seamless transition into Matt Miller’s rotation in his first year St. Maria Goretti. The 6-foot-4 junior, who has experience with Poland’s national team, has played a massive part in his team’s 5-0 start.
“In this level of basketball I can play all positions from 1-4,” Golek said of his overall game. “I like to defend, and play smart basketball. I can shoot the ball well, and make good decisions on the court.”
Golek says the past 12 months spent in Canada and the U.S. has improved understanding of basketball. He has spent a lot of time working improve his shooting form and ball handling as a result.
“I knew European international level of basketball. Now I can compare it with American, and it gives me the opportunity to be the smartest and most experienced guy on the court, which automatically put me one step before my opponent,” Golek explained. “American style of basketball is more about playing one on one with very good defenders, when in Europe you always look for that extra pass. That’s why I need to have better ball handing.”
Golek expects to start, but he also knows it depends on the team they play. He believes his international experience gives him an edge over most players on his team, and he plans to be a vocal leader while making smart decisions in offense. If he is asked to come off the bench, Golek says he will come in and bring consistent energy.
“There’s few things I do on the court. My coaches always wanted players to do little things. It’s very important in national team level. Every box out every trick you can use is very important. Details make you the most valuable player for your teammates.” Golek said of the underrated aspects of his game. ” I can stay focused no matter what the score is. People in Europe and last year in Canada called me “stone cold killer” because my emotions never change.”
This season’s team goal is to win the BCL, per Golek. His personal goal is to play with the 18u national team this summer, and improve his quickness and ball handing. Golek is a fantastic player with a strong academic record. He has gone completely under the radar in recruiting circles, but that should change very soon. What can he bring to a program at the next level?
“A very high IQ for the game.”
