Prospect Spotlight: Kason O’Neal (2018)
Halstead 2018 guard is looking forward to a breakout season after a strong summer competing for the Kansas MTXE 17U Green squad on the grassroots circuit.
At 6’1, 165-pounds, O’Neal is well-rounded player that shoots from the outside well and can play inside or outside.
“I would describe my game to people who haven’t watched by telling them that I am probably above average at everything on the floor,” he said.
A year ago, O’Neal was a part of a Halstead squad that went 12-10 and lost in the second round of Sub-State, but expectations are much higher this season. O’Neal says he already has one game circled on the schedule this season.
“The team I look forward to playing this year is Heston high school because we haven’t beat them in four years and they are our rival,” he says.
O’Neal says competing for MTXE and playing offseason basketball this past summer has helped him prepare for the upcoming season.
“This AAU experience has been so much fun for me,” he said. “At the beginning we started out rough losing our first 7 games but at this point in the season we have progressed a lot.”
O’Neal says the biggest influence on his basketball career to date has been his mother.
“She does a lot for me just so I can play and get better like buying me a membership at the ymca or driving me to all my games,” he said.
An NBA fan, O’Neal says he tries to take elements from a wide range of player’s games and implement it into his own game as best he can.
“I really enjoy watching the NBA because there the best players in the world,” he says. “I have taken away plenty of stuff from watching like some dribbling moves and some shooting techniques.”
