Prospect Spotlight: Gabe Toombs (2019)
With great size and a versatile skill-set, it could be a breakout season for 6-foot-4 Corner Canyon guard Gabe Toombs.
Adeptly knocking down his jumpers is his game, and taking it to the hole is something he excels at, too. Toombs mentioned to PHUT exactly what he likes to do on the hardwood, and what he’s working to improve.
“I believe I’m a pretty good offensive player, I can shoot the ball pretty well and take it to the hole. This year I’m trying to work on making my teammates better by assisting a lot more and rebounding a lot more,” said Toombs.
He came off the bench last year as a sophomore for the Chargers, and this season, the goal is to start and produce in large amounts.
“Being a junior, I feel that I’m a lot more important to my team this year. I’ll need to improve my assists and become a defender who’s able to guard the other team’s best player. That’s probably the main thing I want to focus on this season,” said Toombs.
“Obviously, I want to be one of the main scorers on the team, and a top rebounder in the state. And kind of like Russell Westbrook; just assists a ton, rebound a ton, and just be the best teammate I can.”
And with his his junior and senior seasons ahead of him, plus a 17U season next summer with Utah Mountain Stars, there’s plenty of time to see his recruitment materialize.
“Recruitment-wise, I’m open to any college that’s interested. There’s not really a specific college that I want. And, obviously, I want to be the type of players that college coaches will look at,” said Toombs, Utah’s 22nd-ranked 2018.
“I went to the Weber State elite camp this fall, and then there’s a college, Northwest Nazarene that has sent me mail, and so far that’s it.”
