Prospect Spotlight: Alex Hernandez (2019)
Some people just know how to play the game of basketball. It’s that simple. They step on the court and just get it. No matter the pressure of the situation, there is an understanding of what needs to be done. Alex Hernandez is this type of player.
Alex Hernandez is a junior point guard at Melvindale High School. He’s 5-7, but plays much bigger. In fact, his build and physicality is a strength of his game. Hernandez uses a combination of shiftiness and the ability to find lanes to the basket. This combination allows him to be a playmaker for his team. He plays well off contact in the lane and has good vertical vision to find teammates when driving to the hoop. Hernandez is also a solid three point shooter which keeps a defense honest while guarding him.
Alex Hernandez is in the midst of an exciting high school basketball career. “My best moment in high school basketball so far was definitely winning our league championship last year in our blackout game against Trenton,” he said. Hernandez is looking forward to playing Wyandotte this season. “Everybody picks them to win the league and I want to show everybody we’re just as good as them and we’re not a team to sleep on,” he said. Hernandez is eyeing another league championship this year, as well as leading the league in assists and scoring at least 15 points per game.
Alex Hernandez is on the cusp of a big future in basketball and otherwise. On the court, playing college basketball is his main goal. In the classroom, he is interested in majoring in Sports Medicine. Hernandez is inspired and motivated by his brother. “He’s always pushing me as hard as he possibly can and holds me to a very high standard on and off the court.”
Alex Hernandez should see his recruitment begin this season. He can bring a program an efficient point guard who has the ability to get others involved. A coach can count on Hernandez to be tough and handle any situation thrown at him. He will be a great player to watch develop over the next two years.
