Dunks In Michigan: Shawn Coad (2020)
If you like watching a basketball player jump through the roof, then you need to see Shawn Coad play. He can do things in the air and with the ball that seem superhuman. Coad is from Hopkins and plays for a homeschooled team called Hoop Heaven Angels. He’s a 6-0 sophomore point guard, and is an elite dunker in Michigan. I recently asked Shawn Coad a few questions in regards to dunking:
Question: What is your favorite dunk?
Shawn Coad: My favorite dunk to do is the double clutch.
Question: What do you think makes you a great dunker?
Shawn Coad: God’s gifted me with hops but I’ve also worked really hard at increasing my vertical and strength this year. Its allowing me to dunk with more power and creativity. I think people respect a 6 foot player who can dunk well.
Question: At what age did you first dunk?
Shawn Coad: I was 14 years old when I started doing one and two handed dunks.
Question: What is your most memorable dunk?
Shawn Coad: My most memorable dunk was at a preseason tournament in Carson City a week ago. It was my birthday and I had 4 dunks that day, but I did a 360 dunk for the first time in a game.
Question: What are three other strengths of your game?
Shawn Coad: I lead my team in assists and steals. My speed and agility are also a great asset.
Question: Do you think a dunk has a big effect on a game?
Shawn Coad: I think a dunk can set the tone for a game because it boosts the confidence and excitement of the whole team. Dunks excite the crowd which, in turn, energizes the players. It can also help us as a homeschool team to gain respect.
