6A Mr. Basketball Candidate: Matthew Van Komen
Matthew Van Komen has been a youtube sensation due to his height for quite some time. However, even more impressive than his height is that he is actually skilled. Often times, players with his size struggle with moving and skill development. Although he still has plenty of room to grow in both of these areas, Van Komen is a special prospect with plenty of talent and ability.
Why Matthew Van Komen Could Win Mr. Basketball
The 7’3 center is an absolute game changer. Further, he is coming off of a tremendous Sophomore campaign in which he nearly averaged a double-double.
Although his numbers were strong as a Sophomore, it is reasonable to expect that the big time prospect out of Pleasant Grove will have an even bigger Junior year. He is far from a finished product, but there is enough there for him to make a huge impact in a varsity basketball game.
In addition to providing a post presence that is almost impossible to guard due to his length and soft touch, he is able to protect the paint at a level that no one else in the state is able. Even when he is not blocking shots, his length alters shots and deters drivers.
Moreover, Pleasant Grove will have a strong season in one of the toughest regions in the entire state. Due to this, his numbers will be reflective of playing against quality competition which will only make him more convincing for this award.
Matthew Van Komen’s Mr. Basketball Obstacles
One of the biggest obstacles for Van Komen is the region that he plays in. As mentioned earlier, this could help him as well. However, due to how tough the region is, Pleasant Grove could finish in a lower spot than projected. Typically, the Mr. Basketball candidate needs to be on a team in contention for the state championship.
In addition, this region could hurt his numbers as he will play quality opponent after quality opponent. In order for him to shine and win Mr. Basketball, he will have to dominate a region that is filled with Mr. Basketball candidates.
Lastly, there are a lot of expectations for the 7’3 2019 prospect. After having such a huge Sophomore season, Pleasant Grove will continue to plan to utilize him and he will be at the center of every team’s scouting report.
Matthew Van Komen’s Mr. Basketball Chances
If Pleasant Grove survives its region and wins the state championship, it is almost a no-brainer that the award would have to go to Van Komen. He is in a prime position to win the award as no one will have a better claim in terms of the region and the strength of schedule than a team from this region.
Further, Van Komen’s trajectory is continuing to go upwards. He has improved as a player and will be prepared to have a huge season which will put him right in the mix for this year’s Mr. Basketball.
