3 Reasons Why Benton Harbor Is A State Title Contender
Last year was a banner season for Benton Harbor High School. They were District Champs, Regional Champs, and State Semi-Finalists. In 2017-2018, Benton Harbor looks to continue to improve and contend for a state championship. Below are three reasons why they are a legitimate contender for a state title.
BENTON HARBOR HAS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED PLAYERS IN MICHIGAN:
Championship teams seemingly always have a star. Benton Harbor has one in 6-6 wing Carlos Johnson. There is nobody in the state (or the nation) that he can’t match up with and he can be counted on in big moments. He scores, rebounds and plays defense, all at an elite level.
SIZE:
Benton Harbor is not just tall. They are big and strong, and can match up physically with any team. Carlos Johnson is 6-6 and strong. Devan Nichols and TJ Jones both have nice size for guards at 6-3, plus they both can play above the rim. Chris Conway is an athletic 6-7 while 6-6 wing Justin Brown uses his strength well. Chris Kyles, a 6-6 center, doesn’t intimidate with his height but does with his body and his willingness to bang in the post.
ARRAY OF SKILLS:
Benton Harbor seems to have a player on their roster for every skill needed. Carlos Johnson is a superstar who is a walking double-double. Elijah Baxter is a senior point guard and a skilled floor leader. Senior small forward Shawn Hopkins is a slasher who brings three years of varsity experience. Dennie Brown is a senior guard who is capable and dependable off the bench. Senior guard Devan Nichols is a versatile player who can shoot or take the ball to the basket. Senior guard TJ Jones gives Benton Harbor a three point threat. Justin Brown is a junior wing who is an athlete that can shoot and jump. Chris Conway gives them a tall athlete who thrives on the defensive end. Chris Kyles is a strong banging post player with double-double potential.
