Vincennes Jamboree: Prep School Scouting
PrepHoops attended the Vincennes Jamboree this past Sunday where we evaluated prospects from across the Midwest from both the JUCO and prep ranks. Here we look at the prep school prospects that stood out!
SF Antavion Collum (Tennessee Prep – 2019)
Collum is a physically impressive prospect. He stands at 6’8” with strength especially in his upper body. He plays a point-forward role for Tennessee Prep where he brings the ball up and initiates the offense. His superior strength on the perimeter gives him an advantage over weaker defenders trying to check him. Powerful handling it through traffic and getting in the lane for finishes at the cup. Consistently converts through defenders both going around them and through them. Tough rebounder that has the ability to take it off the rim and go the other way. Collum flashed shooting, but could improve on his jumper. Also over dribbles at times on the perimeter. Projects as a high-major prospect.
SF Traizon Byrd (Tennessee Prep – 2019)
Boyd is a 6’7” lefty small forward. Long and lanky build. Will definitely need to add more strength down the road. The wing is extremely bouncy around the rim. Made a lot of plays getting on the offensive glass for put backs and getting out in transition for dunks. Jump shot was streaky. Seemed a bit long and with a hitch in it. Made one in the second game we saw, but overall it wasn’t falling. D1 prospect probably at the low-major level.
PF Logan Windeler (Gateway Prep – 2018)
Windeler is a skilled power forward that has a nice combination of athleticism and skill. He fought hard on the glass throughout the game that we evaluated. Clean looking stroke that he can connect on from both three and pulling up from 15-18 feet. Also mixed in a runner. Defensively his length and lateral mobility allows him to defend in a ball screen. Low-major prospect.
PG William Norman (Gateway Prep – 2018)
Norman was a prospect that impressed for Gateway Prep. He is a wiry point guard that really shot the ball well from the perimeter. Hit multiple catch and shoot threes. Showed some good leadership tools. Norman is worth a look at the D2 level.
C Charles Bassey (Aspire Academy – 2019)
Bassey was the top prospect at the event. He is considered a consensus top 5 player nationally in the 2019 class. He is a physical specimen at 6’11” 220 pounds and broad shoulders at the center position. Quality athlete that runs the floor well and played hard despite being head and shoulders above anyone talent wise he was playing. He is explosive finishing around the hoop with slams. Opens up wide calling for the basketball. Flashed some quick moves on the block including a nice spin. Also displayed some skill stepping out and hitting a couple jumpers and dished to a cutter for a nice assist. Shot blocking presence on the defensive end. At times he was a bit wild with the ball which caused turnovers. Would have liked to see a little more dominance out of him, but you can definitely see why he is considered such a talented prospect.
SF TJ Smith (Aspire Academy – 2018)
Smith is a prospect that is originally from Illinois that played at Marian Catholic early in his career. He has bounced around prep schools the last couple years and now is at Aspire Academy in Kentucky. Smith is a 6’7” small forward with good size and length. Quality athlete that plays well in the transition game. Jump shot wasn’t falling on this day. Did like how he rebounded the basketball. Low-major/D2 prospect.
SG Jacobi Gordon (Aspire Academy – 2018)
Gordon is a 6’7” wing that has already committed to California. We came away impressed with what this future Pac 12 product brings to the table. He has great size and long strides. Slashing wing that gets to the hole in just a couple long strides. Explosive first step off the bounce. Quick and explosive in the open floor with the ball in his hands. Excels in transition.
C Ousmane Ndim (Apsire Academy – 2018)
Ndim is a 7’0” 225 pound center that has a top three of Oklahoma, LIU Brooklyn, Hofstra at this stage, but is open to other schools. He has a thick body and is a physically imposing big man on the interior. Sound rebounder that got on the glass at a high rate and was a shot blocking presence. Still pretty raw on the offensive end of the floor.
