Sectional Preview: 61
The coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 61.
Borden (13-12) – Lost Sectional Finals
Last year Borden got off to a hot start winning their first seven games before faltering midway through the season. They got hot again at the end of the year winning their first two sectional games before falling in the championship. This will be a team to watch in this sectional this year with a history of winning.
Christian Academy (13-14) – Lost Sectional Finals
Christian Academy plays a weird schedule with teams from every class on it, plus some teams from Kentucky. Last year they had a stretch where they played seven games over seven days and that looks like it could be the case again this year. They consistently play well in the postseason and I look for that to continue this year.
Lanesville (11-13) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Lanesville struggled a bit coming off of a 18 win season in 2015-16 but that was due to a huge loss in talent. Still they won a respectable amount of games and dealt with injuries. They have a ton of seniors this year on the team and they look to get back to their winning ways.
New Washington (20-10) – Lost Semi-State
New Washington had a great season last year with one of the best 1A players on their squad, Stevie Mack. This year, Mack is gone and someone else will have to step up for them if they want to have the level of success they had last year again.
Rock Creek Academy (13-11) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Rock Creek was a pretty solid team last year with a ton of experience, but this year things will be very different. They lost nine seniors from last year’s squad and this team will be the epitome of a rebuild. They do return their leading scorer from last year though so look for Terrance Browning to be a huge contributor.
South Central (Elizabeth) (7-17) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
This was a very young team last year and they only lose three seniors. With those three, they lose half their scoring but return a ton of experience. South Central is a tough team to pin down due to the returners not scoring a bunch but yet playing a lot. Could be a good year for them.
Contenders For 2017-18: Borden, Christian Academy, Lanesville
Prediction: Lanesville
Player to Watch: Riley Cook (Lanesville)
