Sectional Preview: 59
The coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 59.
Central Christian (18-7) – Lost 2nd Rd. Sectionals
Central Christian had a pretty decent year last year and they won their first Sectional game in four years. This year, they return their leading scorer, Michael Roberson, who is also one of the best scorers in the state. This will be a team to watch even though they lost some good players they still are potent.
Cristel House Academy (4-17) – DNC
A season opening win last year did not spell success for Cristel House Academy who did not compete in a sectional. This year is the school’s first year in a Sectional and they will be looking to gain some postseason experience in a decently tough Sectional for them.
Greenwood Christian (7-17) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Last year, Greenwood Christian struggled a bit, but that may have been due to only having one senior on the team. They return their leading two scorers, both juniors, and should be quite a bit better. I look for them to breakout this year and increase their win total to no less than double-digits.
Indianapolis Lighthouse South (12-11) – DNC
Last year, Lighthouse didn’t compete in a Sectional and like Cristel House, this will be their first one. They lost their best scorer due to graduation but they return two pretty good scorers as seniors this year. This could be a team that finally breaks out this year with a new coach.
Indianapolis Lutheran (12-13) – Lost Regional Final
Lutheran was up-and-down last year before getting a good draw in sectional only playing two games to win it and then taking down Hauser in the regional final. Lutheran does lose their top three scorers so that may take them down a notch this year.
Indianapolis Tindley (22-5) – Won 1A State Finals
One of the most high powered 1A offenses took a hit when Hunter White transferred and their coach left. But Tindley still has the best player in 1A and a top 5 player in the state with Eric Hunter. Hunter alone will lead them to many wins again this year but the absence of White will be noticed.
Providence Cristo Rey (9-13) – DNC
Last year, Providence Cristo Rey had a really tough year going on some winning and losing streaks before dropping their last four games by 20 or more points each. They are competing in their first Sectional as well as three other teams making this a really interesting group with only one team that was much below .500 last year.
Contenders For 2017-18: Central Christian, Greenwood Christian, Tindley
Prediction: Tindley
Player to Watch: Michael Roberson (Central Christian)
