Sectional Preview: 48
The coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 48.
Evansville Mater Dei (11-14) – Lost Sectional Final
Evansville Mater Dei had a good postseason run last year but do lose five seniors that contributed. They do return three players that contributed at a high level so I think that this year they will still contend even though they lost a good chunk of their players. Sam Fulton led them in points last year and he returns as a senior this year. He’s going to have a big year.
Forest Park (18-10) – Lost 1st Rd. Regional
Forest Park got through their sectional last year and made it to regional. They have a ton of seniors on this year’s team and only lost one player. They also have two freshmen coming in that could contribute and that will only help them. They have a lot of height which will really be tough to defend for opposing teams.
North Posey (11-13) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Last year, North Posey should have been better and this year they will be. They return their top three scorers and only lose two players. A freshman led them in points last year with 17.8 a game and he will be back and looking to be even better. This will be a very solid team this year in a stacked sectional.
Perry Central (7-17) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Perry Central will be hurting a little bit this year after graduating four seniors including their leading two scorers. In a sectional that is as top heavy as this one losing their two top scorers will really hurt them this year. They do have a lot of returning players though so this could be a year to use to gain experience.
South Spencer (10-13) – Lost 2nd Rd. Sectional
South Spencer loses a ton of talent from last year. Seven seniors leave the team while only five return, including four seniors to-be. This may be the first year of many that South Spencer is down. After this year the cupboard will be bare.
Tecumseh (6-17) – Lost 2nd Rd. Sectional
Tecumseh returns all but one player to their team this year and this year they will be much better. They may still be a year away from competing but they do have six juniors this year on the team and just two seniors. They are experienced enough that they could pull out a 12 win season or so but will be much better in 2018-19.
Tell City (13-11) – Lost 2nd Rd. Sectional
Tell City has a host of young talent on their roster and with two years together under their belt they will be a ton better this year. They only lose one contributor and have a huge amount of juniors and three returning seniors. They, like Tecumseh, will compete but may have a much better shot in two years.
Contenders For 2017-18: Evansville Mater Dei, Forest Park, North Posey, Tecumseh, Tell City
Prediction: Forest Park
Player to Watch: Josiah Ricketts (North Posey)
