Region Preview: 5A Northwest
Liberty largely dominated the Northwest region last year as the majority of the teams did not have the guard play to handle the chaotic style of play. However, a number of teams in this region were quite youthful last year. Thus, they will bring back a good portion of their teams and be ready to challenge a talented Liberty team for the Northwest region crown.
Region Preview: 5A Northwest
1. Liberty
Liberty won the Northwest region championship largely unscathed last year. However, there were a lot of questions going into this year as they lost their two leading scorers from last season. Those questions are not lingering anymore as Quentin Guliford has taken his game to a whole new level. The recent NCAA Division-I commit has found a way to maximize his skill set in a short period of time. In addition to Guliford, Liberty will be aided greatly by transfer Josh Ursery. Ursery is explosive and will fit into this style of play well. In addition to personal, one of the toughest parts of playing against Liberty is their style of play. Few teams press in a similar fashion, thus it can be really difficult to prepare for them.
2. Shadow Ridge
Shadow Ridge is more than capable of taking second in this region. Despite a tough record last season, Shadow Ridge played primarily underclassmen. In fact, their five leading scorers all return from last season. The biggest, figuratively and literally, returning player is Anthony Garza Anthony Garza 6'7" | PF Phhoenix Prep Post Grad | 2021 State AZ . Garza has a lot of potential to go along with good size and athleticism. In addition look for 2018 prospects Zach Clark and Caleb Fields to provide leadership and a scoring presence for the group. This team should be much improved this upcoming season.
3. Centennial
Centennial has the vast majority of their varsity team returning and should be prepared to make a run for the region title. Even though have a good portion of last year’s team returning, a lot of their success will depend on the transition they make to their new coach. The most athletic prospect on this roster is Koby Jones. The 2018 SF is one of the most explosive players in the state. His athleticism and improved shot will enable him to make a big impact this season. In addition to Jones, Trenton Washington and Payton Nelson will play big roles for this group. Washington brings size and strength while Nelson brings shooting and a high IQ.
