Recruiting Report: Tariq Shepard (2019)
Already with two Division I offers in tow, Detroit East English Village point guard Tariq Shepard could still pick up several more before his college decision is finalized.
The 5-foot-10 junior has been offered by Detroit and Northern Illinois, and mentioned interest from Miami of Ohio, Kent State, Northern Kentucky, VCU, Marist and Central Michigan. He also says Michigan State wants him to come on a visit.
Michigan’s 33rd-ranked 2019, Shepard picked up the Detroit offer over the summer, and recently picked up the Northern Illinois, offer earlier this month.
He mentioned a bit about his impressions of each program.
“Detroit is a fast-paced team, and they like to get up and down and score, that’s all I know right now,” said Shepard.
“Northern Illinois is an up-tempo team, and they like that I’m a leader.”
He added: “I hope I get some more D1 offers, and more schools start looking at me.”
A quick and dynamic playmaker, Shepard mentioned his playing style — strengths and weaknesses — to PHMI.
“I’m an aggressive guard, I like to take it into the lane. And I can hit the 3 ball too, and get my teammates involved,” said Shepard.
“I’m working on creating space off the dribble, and creating my own shot, and being more of a leader for my team.”
Shepard spent his spring and summer playing with one of the Midwest’s best grassroots programs, The Family 16U.
“My role was to play defense, score, and really that’s it. I was satisfied with how I played with them.”
Now, he’s eager to get his junior season with the Bulldogs underway.
“My expectations this year is to be more of a leader, average close to a double double, get a city title and get a state title, too.” said Shepard.
