After sustaining a minor injury this past summer, Hayden 5-foot-11 point guard Jett Canfield is eager to get back to 100 percent and show exactly how good he’s capable of being.
Before this summer, when he was playing at less than 100 percent with Run GMC, Canfield was seeing plenty of Division II interest come his way, and that intrigued him.
But it’s the preferred walk-on opportunities at Midwest high-majors that’s most intriguing to him right now.
“A lot of the MIAA’s want to see me play this winter, just because they knew I was hurt this summer. They were talking to me before, and they know I was hurt, so they want to see me play this high school season,” said Canfield.
“But then I have some opportunities for preferred walk-ons, and I’m really interested in that; I’ve been taking visits to Oklahoma, Kansas State, Illinois (this coming weekend), and Missouri had interest, but I didn’t end up visiting there. I’m really interested in that just to see how far I can take my game.”
It’s the desire to see just how good of a basketball player he can become, with all the right tools in place, that makes the high-level options such an attractive option.
“I’d love to see how far I could take my game, with a great weight program and playing against the best guys around, and just seeing how good I could get — that’s why the preferred walk-on is appealing to me,” he said.
But, he’s going to see how his senior season shakes out, and what D2 scholarship offers may come in before making his college decision.
“I’m definitely still looking at those D2s, and waiting to see if they offer me,” said Canfield.” I’m definitely open to those options, too.”
Wherever he lands, that program will be getting a prolific scorer, who is capable of being a big-time assist guy. Canfield broke down his playing style to PHKS.
“I’d say my strengths are that I know the game really well. I know where to get the ball and when. I think I handle it well and I’m a good passer, and I can score as well,” said Canfield.
“What I need to get better at, and what I have gotten better at, is on the defensive end; just being more active and getting my hands on more balls.”
This spring while running with Run GMC 17U is when he suffered a stress fracture. And thinking it was a simple groin injury, Canfield played during the summer, though not at 100 percent.
“It was my last season of AAU, I just wanted to go out with my guys and hoop. But looking back, I probably shouldn’t have played through it,” said Canfield,
“Overall, I thought it went well, I just wished I was full speed and could have showcased more of what I had.”
He’ll be back for the Wildcats’ first game, and expects to be 100 percent. He’s ready to cement his legacy as one of Hayden’s best ever.
“I’m super excited, I’ve been a Hayden fan since I was two. I was born into it, my mom went to Hayden,” said Canfield.
“My role won’t change much, I’ll be a scorer, and I’ll be dishing it out, too.”
He added: “I’m really excited, I just want to get back to 100 percent and just go at it from there.”
