Recruiting Report: Jayden Johnson (2020)
Batavia’s 2020 Jayden Johnson is a power wing from Batavia that is steadily making a case for a top 10 ranking in the next update of the 2020 rankings. He opened our eyes when we saw him in July at the High Academic Showcase and continued that momentum at the PrepHoops Top 250 Expo this fall! The 6’4 small forward has a strong body, but one to where he should be able to continue to grow and maintain strength as he gets taller and body matures. Johnson is mostly known as a perimeter shooter. He did show that off drilling quite a few sweet jumpers. Quick release and gets elevation off the floor. Going to be a big time shot maker the next three years at Batavia. He displayed improvement in two key areas. His driving game has developed with tighter handles and finished well through contact at the rim. Defensively his lateral mobility and anticipation was much better than what we had seen in the past. Really looking forward to continuing to track this D1 prospect.
He played with Fundamental U on the 15U circuit this past July.
“I think it went real well. I think we made a name for ourselves after our first season together. I think teams are starting to know who we are and that is what we want.”
Johnson spoke about how he is diversifying his offensive game.
“I am trying to show people I can take the ball to the basket and score in multiple different ways. That is what I am focusing on now. Not so much my jump shot. Taking the ball to the rim.”
How are open gyms going with Batavia?
“It is good seeing the guys back in the gym working hard. I am getting in there with them and building relationships with them. That is going to be a big thing. Looking forward to a great year. We should be very solid. I think we have a chance to win our conference. Our conference is always one of the top conferences in the state every year.”
No offers yet, but several schools are showing early interest in the wing.
“Stanford, Eastern Illinois, Iona, Illinois State, and a few other schools. Nothing too major right now.”
