Prospect Spotlight: Jamal Wingfield (2020)
Checking in at No. 24 in Washington’s inaugural 2020 rankings, 6-foot-3 point guard Jamal Wingfield is certainly a prospect to keep an eye on.
We recently caught up with the young standout, and he explained to PHWA exactly what his playing style is.
“I usually try and make the best basketball play, it’s not all about scoring with me. I’m just trying to make the best play, whether it’s getting the rebound and passing out to my teammates, or scoring on a break,” said Wingfield.
“I’ve really improved my mid-range, and I excel at getting to the rim. I need to make sure I’m working on my vision, because I’m transforming from a three to a point guard, so I need to work on my basketball IQ and my vision.”
This spring and summer, Wingfield played with Seattle Swish 15U, and it was then when his coach discovered he had potential to be a standout point guard.
“I thought I played pretty good,” said Wingfield. “And during the summer league, I brought the ball up once and I made a play, and my coach decided to play me there more. And I started getting comfortable with it.”
As his sophomore season draws near, Wingfield says his role will be to lead his guys at Graham Kapowsin.
“This year, I see my role as being more of a floor general. We have the right personnel, we just need a leader, and I feel like I can take on that leader role,” said Wingfield.
“I just want to contribute to my team’s win. I just want to make the right plays to win.”
As for his recruitment, though he he still has lots of time for that to materialize, it’s something he dreams about now.
“I have not gotten letters in the mail for athletics, I’ve gotten mail for academics, but none for athletics,” said Wingfield.
“I think about it all the time; I dream about it. But I just have to let that come to me and keep working.”
