Prospect Spotlight: Garrett Pumphrey (2018)
When you make a list of do it all players in high school basketball, one of the guys at the top of your list better be Cambridge City Lincoln’s Garrett Pumphrey. The 6’8 center is the epitome of what you look for in a center. He is very agile which helps him move on defense and he has a great basketball IQ.
The first two years in high school we all caught glimpses of what Pumphrey could be and last year he finally put it all together. Pumphrey averaged 17.5 points a game, 13.5 rebounds a game, and an astonishing 6.6 blocks a game. He still needs to add some weight and strength and when he does his stock will take off.
The 72nd ranked prospect on the Prep Hoops 2018 rankings in Indiana will see his stock climb quickly this year as he is sure to increase his statistics in every single category as he looks to lead his team to a state championship. Thus far Pumphrey only has interest from Division II and below schools, but don’t be surprised if he has a few DI coaches pop in to watch him play.
Although he doesn’t have any offers yet, Pumphrey has taken a few visits. He has been to Adrian (MI), Earlham, Ferris State, and Marian and doesn’t have any current plans for anymore right now.
This year Pumphrey improved a lot and felt that his summer AAU season went really well. He ran with Indiana Legends and was able to see some really good competition due to playing with them.
“I had my best AAU experience with Indiana Legends I have ever had,” Pumphrey said. “I was able to play top competition and improve myself. I worked on my post scoring so I really improved my offense the most this summer.”
Knowing Pumphrey improved his scoring is not a good sign for opposing teams because he already was able to score in the post. Now, he will be an even tougher task for the defense to stop. Pumphrey is already looking forward to his high school season and has some very attainable goals in mind.
“I’m excited about the upcoming season,” Pumphrey said. “We are going to play some higher competition this year around the state. I want to get my one thousandth point and I want to break the record for most blocks in Indiana high school history for a career.”
Pumphrey will be sure to increase the interest surrounding him with a big year this year and he hopes to finds a school that fits him best.
“I am looking for a good community to be in,” Pumphrey said. “I want a team of players that can have a great chemistry and do things out of basketball. I do not have a preference on if a school is religious or not. I want a great coaching staff.”
