Pangos: 2021 Illinois Scouting
PrepHoops was in the house in La Grange, Illinois all weekend for the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp featuring some of the premier young prospects in the Midwest. We have extensive scouting on the event. Here is our 2021 Illinois Scouting Report.
G Ahamad Bynum (Simeon)
Bynum made a very strong case as the best 2021 prospect in the state of Illinois. The Simeon 6’1” guard showed more of a passing game than we had seen in the past. He is a physically mature and strong point guard with plus athleticism. Powerful and explosive getting in the lane. Got to the rim consistently. Finished with a few acrobatic shots. Jump shot was on point all camp drilling pull up jumpers and threes. At times he can get a little shot happy from deep, but shoots a good ball. His passing was electric especially in the top 30 all-star game. He made multiple spectacular dishes for dimes. Showed much more combo guard skills that we had seen in the past. Bynum needs to start being tracked by D1 programs now!
SG Daemond Russell (De La Salle)
Russell is a 6’3” shooting guard that has a long and lanky build. The lefty is a willing passer with the ball in his hands. Can be a bit loose with the rock and has a slow shot. Projectable kid physically that has some areas to improve.
PG Boopie Miller (Morgan Park)
Miller is a tiny point guard, but he is a playmaker with the ball. Slick ball handler that has the rock on a string. Crossover and handles allow him to create separation for his three point shot. Deep range on his three point shot. Likes to take deep threes which he can make, but sometimes plays too much of a one on one game as a scorer playing to the crowd.
SF Grant Newell (Whitney Young)
Newell stands at 6’5” with a long and rangy build. He is still growing into his body at a young age. Flashed skill potential including hitting a couple threes.
SG Jaylin Gibson (Evanston)
The Pangos camp was my first time seeing Gibson who I have heard good things about. The 6’3” shooting guard has excellent size and plus athleticism at the two guard spot. Right now he plays best in an up and down game which camps like Pangos allow to him to show. He handles it well in the open floor and makes slick passes. Finishes above the rim. Defensively he contests shots and competes. Projects as a quality defender. Definitely a 2021 to track in Illinois.
PG Reginald Ward (St. Rita)
Ward is a 6’1” scoring point guard with quality height early in the process. He is a smooth guard that can slide over and play some two if needed. Handles the ball well and can take it to the rim off the bounce.
SG Jalen Butler (Niles North)
Butler stands at 6’4” with a strong frame and looks very mature for a 2021 prospect with his physical stature. The power guard attacks the hoop with authority! Plays really hard every possession. Gets on the offensive glass for put backs. Can post up smaller/weaker wings that defend him.
SG Brandon Weston (Lake Forest Academy)
Weston is a 6’4” power wing from the east coast who plays for PSA Cardinals on the circuit. He has landed at Lake Forest Academy where he looks to make an impact as a freshman. Big time slashing scorer that gets in the lane and makes plays scoring at the hoop. Finishes consistently through traffic at the cup. Also flashes deep range on a jumper. Rebounds very well for his position. D1 potential.
F Amar Augillard (Zion Benton)
This is a 6’4” combo forward that is a tough finisher inside. Runs the floor well getting points in transition. Active on the defensive end.
PG Nick Owens (Curie)
Owens is a very small lead guard at only 5’4”. He has tight handles and the ball on a string. Tough and competitive kid that has deep range on his three point shot.
SF Troy D’Amico (Niles Notre Dame)
D’Amico is a skilled forward at 6’4” from Niles Notre Dame High School. He isn’t overly athletic, but his very high skill level makes up for it. The crafty wing plays within himself and gets to the hoop with solid handles. Also can drill shots off the catch from beyond the arc with consistency.
PG Terrence Ford (Harlan)
Terrence Ford is a 5’7” lead guard that lacks height, but has game at a young age. The floor general is a competitive kid that handles it well in tight spaces and makes quality decisions with the rock. Pesky defender.
