Pangos: 2020 Illinois Scouting Pt 2
PrepHoops was in the house in La Grange, Illinois all weekend for the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp featuring some of the premier young prospects in the Midwest. We have extensive scouting on the event. Here is part 2 of our 2020 Illinois Scouting Report.
PF Romelle Howard (Lincoln Park)
The Pangos event was Howard’s coming out party. He wasn’t on our radar at all heading into the event and was one of the more impressive rebounders from Illinois at the camp. The physical 6’6” power forward snatches rebounds in traffic consistently. He plays with a lot of force and has a high running motor all the time. Runs the floor very well. Offensively he flashes a lefty hook shot on occasion. Most of his points come on put backs. Really like the toughness he brings on the boards and defensively.
PG Abnar Muhammad (De La Salle)
Muhammad is a 5’11 guard from Chicago Catholic League’s De La Salle High School. Thick bodied point guard that has a good feel for the game. Not a flashy player at all, but quietly goes about his business and gets stuff done!
PF Collin Crothers (Benet)
The Benet 6’8” big man had a nice showing at the Pangos camp. Country strong big man has good mobility, but lacks athleticism which can hurt him at times against length or bigger posts. He showed some tools to work with though. Played physical on the block and got deep post position. Displayed overall good skill level including hitting a pair of pull up threes and used a nice looking right handed hook shot on the block. Good camp for the Benet post.
SG Andrew Crawford (Lake Forest Academy)
Crawford is a 6’1” shooting guard that is a gritty wing. He has a clean looking stroke that he connected on at a nice clip from three off the catch. Finished well through contact on a couple drives.
PF Sincere Callwood (Simeon)
Callwood opened our eyes with his play at the Pangos camp. The 6’5” Simeon undersized four man has great strength, toughness, and bounce. Callwood had a few monster jams throughout the event. Plays with a never ending motor and gets on the glass. Runs floor hard in transition. Skill level will need to improve to max out ability.
SF Bryce Hall (Simeon)
Hall is a 6’4” small forward from Simeon with a lot of projectability in his game. Totally looks the part with his length and ability to handle the ball in space. Skilled wing that plays best in an up and down game where he can make plays in the open floor. Solid passer and can hit an occasional three. Prospect that leaves you wanting more at times because he has so much raw talent.
PG Elijah Pickens (Curie)
Pickens is a 5’6” tiny point guard that has quite a bit of game in his small frame. Slick getting in the lane and to the rim where he can throw up tough shots. Plus passing point guard that has vision and feel. Height will be his biggest thing to overcome.
F Jamario Minnefield (Simeon)
Minnefield is a 6’4” combo forward with broad shoulders and solid size. Tough kid that is an active defender and rebounds well for his position. Flashes offensively including a nice spin and finish at the cup.
SG Davis Walker (Walker Academy Homeschool)
The 6’2” homeschooled Walker is a physically built wing that proved to be a very good shooter from distance. He knocked down multiple threes in one of the games we scouted.
SG Javantae Brackens (North Lawndale)
Brackens is a lengthy shooting guard at 6’4” that is a projectable long term prospect. He is a slasher that gets to the rim and finishes well in the paint. Like what he could turn into on the defensive end as well.
SF Aaron Tims (Hinsdale South)
Tims is a combo forward at 6’7” that is a lefty from Hinsdale South. That sound familiar? That is where the 2018 #3 overall prospect Zion Griffin goes and Tims will be his apprentice this season. Tims is pretty thin and will definitely need to add strength going forward, but he does a lot of little things that stand out. Quality rebounder and shot blocking presence defensively. Can put it on the deck occasionally although his handles could get tighter. Upside here!
SG Daveon Rogers (North Lawndale)
Rogers is a 6’0” wing that is a thick guard. Undersized and power wing that isn’t overly projectable. Rebounds well and finishes on offensive rebound put backs. Needs to improve his ball handling to reach potential.
SG PJ Edwards (Springfield Lanphier)
Edwards reportedly starred at the Pangos camp the weekend before in Texas and was very good again in Chicago. The 6’3” guard has good strength and athleticism at the guard spot. He pushes it in transition and gets to the rim. Best when he can get a head of steam behind him and take it at the hoop. Gets to the hoop and finishes through contact. Drive and kick ability. Rebounds well from the two guard position on both ends of the floor. Should have a big year at Lanphier and it wouldn’t shock us if by mid-season he became their best player. D1 prospect.
PG Elliot Sieger (Whitney Young)
Sieger is a top 10 prospect in the state’s 2020 class. He really struggled at the Pangos camp and wasn’t that productive at all in the two games we watched. Got to the line a few times, but his shot wasn’t falling from deep and struggled with turnovers. Still feel he is a top 10 player in the class, but it definitely wasn’t his best performance.
SG John Ittounas (Stevenson)
Ittounas is a 5’11” undersized two guard from Stevenson. He is a skilled guard and a solid slasher. Should be a quality player this season for the Patriots.
SF Demarius Splunge (Orr)
Splunge is a 6’6” small forward from Orr that has emerged with his play late in July and this fall at various camps including the PrepHoops Top 250 and Pangos Camp. He is a jumbo wing with size, strength, and athleticism. Tough cover when he is attacking on straight line drives to the hoop which he loves to do. Jumper is best from mid-range and streaky from three. Rebounds at a very high level and can take it off the glass and go the other way. When we first saw him we thought he was more of a ball dominant player that was just looking for his shots, but at the Pangos camp he displayed more passing feel than we had seen in the past. Top 10 probably in the next 2020 update and already has four D1 offers on the table.
SG Ken Sallee (Simeon)
Salle is another Simeon prospect that played well at the camp. The 6’3” two guard runs the floor hard and plays with a high activity level. Competes on the defensive end and makes plays on that end. Hits an occasional pull up jumper.
SG Jayden Sutherland (St. Rita)
The St. Rita 6’2” shooting guard is a thick wing that is a nice driver using his power to bully his way to the rim. Not overly athletic, but is extremely tough!
SG Dante Maddox (Bloom)
Maddox is a 6’2” shooting guard from Bloom that is an athletic and can score the basketball. His athleticism shows through in the transition game where he gets out as a finisher with big dunks. He is a quality scorer in the half court as well with range on his shot out to beyond the three point arc. Clean looking stroke. At times he takes some forced shots from deep. D1 talent.
PF Seryee Lewis (Kenwood)
Lewis is one of the more intriguing posts in the 2020 class. He didn’t play very well in the games we saw leading up to the top 30 game, but shined when the stars were on the floor. Ran the floor hard in transition where he was rewarded and played with a high activity level especially on the glass. Consistency and toughness are the two biggest things he needs to improve on because he has D1 talent.
