KANSAS BREAK OUT CANDIDATES (2019)
Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at some 2019 players who are poised for a big season
Christian Braun, 6’5, SG, 2019, Blue Valley Northwest (Kan.) MoKan Elite
Braun sat behind a talented senior class a year ago and essentially got limited playing time off the bench for Blue Valley Northwest. But with several varsity spots having opened up due to graduation and Braun is set for a big season after putting together a big summer competing for MoKan Elite. He is a smooth guard with a versatile, all-around offensive game.
Noah Butler, 6’4, F, 2019, Free State (Kan.) KC Run GMC
We have gone back and forth about Butler’s future as a wing or a power forward at the next level and he has the skills to do a little bit of both. He’s strong and physical, yet can handle the ball a little and has an improving 3-point stroke.
Brett Chapple, 6’5, F, 2019, Lawrence (SSA Elite)
One of the state’s true glue guy types, Chapple is a winner who does a little bit of everything at a high level. He is a terrific rebounder and defender and showed he was able to take his game to the post this offseason. He will be counted on for a lot of production this season as Lawrence fields a new look team this year. He is a much improved post player and we feel most high school teams will have a hard time handling him in the paint.
Jacob Coleman, 6’4, F, 2019, Basehor-Linwood (MoKan Select)
Coleman put together a nice offseason and appears poised to take on a large role this upcoming season with Basehor-Linwood, a team that will be undergoing a lot of turnover this season. Coleman is an athletic inside-outside type who can score in the paint or step out and shoot from the outside.
Trey Quartlebaum, 6’1, PG, 2019, Lawrence (Run GMC)
A talented guard, Quartlebaum was one of several young players who had to wait their turn a year ago, but with graduation of several key seniors, the transfer of Butler to Free State and a key injury to Clearance King, Quartlebaum will be counted on for production and leadership this season, a huge change in his role off the bench a year ago. He showed this summer he is up to the task, showing the ability to get to the bucket, shoot from the outside and lead a team.
