The Basketball Interview … Tyson Wilkins (2018)
Two years removed from being a part of a state championship team at Osage City, 2018 forward Tyson Wilkins is gearing up for his senior season with high expectations.
Prep Hoops recently caught up with Wilkins and asked him about his offseason and the upcoming year.
PH — How would you describe your game to people who haven’t seen you play?
Tyson — I would describe myself as a player like Klay Thomson. My best attribute is shooting the three, but can also get to the rim.
PH — Tell us about your summer and what you did to get prepared for the upcoming season?
Tyson — I loved my AAU team, we were a family and always got along together. Playing tough competition made us so much better throughout the summer. The friendships will last a lifetime.
PH — Tell us about your upcoming high school season.
Tyson — After winning state my sophomore year, the team was very young my junior year. We struggled after our Senior Leader got hurt and was out for the rest of the year. This year, I’m the leader of the team, our starting five is back and we should make another run at the state title.
PH — What team or player are you looking forward to playing against the most this season?
Tyson — The person I’m most looking forward to play this year is Mason Griffin. He plays for SSA Elite and is on a great Silver Lake team. Mason is a outstanding all around player and the game at Silver Lake will be a tight one.
PH — Who has had the biggest influence on your basketball career?
Tyson — The biggest influence on my career is easily my dad. He went to college at Baker University, and has helped me with my game since I was a little kid.
PH — Do you have a favorite college or NBA player that you like to watch?
Tyson — My favorite NBA player to watch is Russell Westbrook. After KD stabbed the Thunder in the back, Russ stepped up and became the face of the franchise. I personally enjoy his loyalty to the Thunder after just signing a huge contract extension.
PH — What elements of your game are you working on as you get ready for the high school season?
Tyson — I’m working on ball handling in my game. Ball handling is the biggest weakness in my game. Once I improve my ball handling, the sky is the limit.
