The Basketball Interview with Gus Reede
Gus Reede has committed to Northern State and has finished up his career as an AAU player. Now everything is about enjoying his senior year. Gus is the first player up talking about his basketball life this year in the annual “The Basketball Interview” series.
At your school, what is your favorite part or parts about game days in terms of the routine leading up to the game?
GR: The fact that we get to pray before games at Roncalli, it is something that is special because most schools aren’t allowed to.
What makes your crowd unique?
GR: We have the best student section in the state because they always show up in large numbers and are loud the whole game, they are always getting in the heads of the other teams players and coaches.
Who is the toughest player you can recall playing against in South Dakota basketball and why?
GR: Ty Hoglund, hardest player to stop because of the way he could score but also get his teammates open shots.
Who is your biggest rival and what about them makes the rivalry both heated and memorable?
GR: Most people would say our rival would be Groton but we have beaten them 33 straight times so I wouldn’t say that’s a rivalry, so I’d say Sisseton the games are always competitive and mean a lot in region and conference play.
Who is your favorite basketball player in the world and why?
GR: Kevin Durant, he doesn’t care what anyone has to say about him and is the most skilled basketball player I’ve ever watched.
All basketball players love gear. What brand of gear or type of gear are you partial to?
GR: Nike, it’s the best looking and most comfortable.
What is your favorite venue to play basketball in that you’ve played in?
GR: Rapid City Civic Center, we won a state championship there so it’s a special place to me.
What court that you haven’t played on would you dream of playing on?
GR: Denny Sanford Center
Explain the relationship varsity players have at your school with youth players?
GR: Coming from a small school you know everyone so we have a good relationship with younger kids and they know the expectations for them when they get older
Best coaching advice you’ve received is what and who was it from?
GR: My attitude affects the teams attitude so I need to have a good one from Coach Neuendorf
Who is your basketball influence?
GR: Kyle Schwan, he played at Northern State when I was young and also went to Roncalli and now is my trainer so he has influenced me a lot.
