Recruiting Report: Lamontay Daughtery (2020)
Lamontay Daughtery is one of the premier prospects in the 2020 class in Illinois. The Duquoin 6’6” small forward has a great frame and tremendous athletic ability. The two biggest areas we have seen growth are his perimeter skill set and confidence. Daughtery shot the ball tremendously well when we saw him recently at the Southern Illinois Fall Skills Day. He shoots it from a low release point, but gets it off clean most of the time and consistently knocked them down pulling up from both mid-range and three. You combine that with his freakish athleticism in the open floor where he took several quality defenders off the bounce and that makes him a problem for defenders to stop. Daughtery had multiple spin moves where he left defenders in the dust. He is playing with a much higher motor than we have seen in the past. That is seen on the offensive glass where he regularly gets second chance points with his explosive quick twitched jumping. Even flashed a few post moves including a right handed hook. Defensively he has a chance to be effective with his physical tools, but he will have to play with a higher desire on that end. Daughtery will also need to get stronger as his career progresses. He solidified a high-major grade in my book with his play. Big 10 and Big 12 schools need to start monitoring him.
He ran with Brad Beal Elite on the grassroots circuit and had a strong close to July playing on the 15U level.
“I think we had a great season. We had our ups and downs, but finished strong.”
Where did he see the biggest growth in his game throughout the summer?
“Me personally I feel I developed a lot more around the rim. I shoot more now. They showed me how to take good shots and get to the rim.”
His confidence really rose throughout the month seeing that he can compete against many of the best players his age nationally.
“Coach said just play your game. I really embraced that and just kept playing my game.”
How is it going with Duquoin in open gyms preparing for next high school season?
“It is pretty good. We are all learning new things. I am excited to be with them back in the gym and preparing for the season.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“SIU has shown a lot of interest and given me an offer.”
He spoke about landing his first college scholarship offer from the local Missouri Valley program.
“It was truly a blessing to have at D1 offer as a sophomore. I like the campus and the program. They showed me a lot of things that their guys do.”
North Texas, Illinois, St. Louis, and Iowa State are some other schools that are showing early interest. Daughtery ranks as the #3 overall prospect in the 2020 class in Illinois and top small forward. He is #86 in the nation in the debut PrepHoops National sophomore rankings.
