Recruiting Report 2020: Dimingus Stevens
Dimingus Stevens, 6’5″, WG, 2020. Woodrow Wilson HS Tigers. Washington, DC.
Grassroots Team: DC Blue Devils 15U.
Since his middle school years Dimingus has been known on the national level. Entering his sophomore year, we predict Dimingus will break out for the powerful Wilson Tigers from Washington, DC & enter the 2020 national rankings. Currently, we rate Dimingus @ #15 for very strong 2020 class, with great potential to move up. We scouted Dimingus at the University of Maryland Team games this June where he displayed flashes of excellence. Head Wilson HS Coach said this summer Dimingus will start this coming season & be a go to player. On June 26 I wrote, Dimingus is a big time talent who can score in bunches. His 3 point shot is excellent and he can attack the rim finishing with a powerful dunk. Dimingus has has a huge upside and he could breakout this season as a sophomore. Dimingus continued his excellent play for Wilson at the Wilson HS More Than Basketball summer league where he averaged 24 ppg & 6 rpg. The Tigers were undefeated & won the championship. On the Grassroots Under Armour Circuit he played for the DC Blue Devils 15U & some 17U games where he averaged 14ppg & 5 rpg.
We chatted with Dimingus this week & we asked him to discuss his offensive strengths & he said,”My goal is to become the most versatile player I can on both sides of the ball. On offense I like to attack the rim off the dribble in the half court or in transition. On the perimeter, I have college 3 point range & can hit 3s on or off the dribble. My shot has a quick release & I can score in the mid range off of a flex cut, ball screen or off the dribble. While I am a scorer, I have a good basketball IQ & I want to get my teammates involved. My court vision is very good which helps me with my facilitation skills. Coach Hernandez stresses ball movement & think I am a good ball mover. I consider myself a good listener & teammate, always wanting to improve”
Dimingus is blessed with a great basketball physique, possessing a strong lean frame adding to a very long wingspan & legs. He moves very well for his age & size and appears to be still growing. Dimingus is very good athlete & we have seen him go coast to coast off the dribble & finish with a hard dunk. On the perimeter or in transition he has the ability to blow by his defender with quickness. With his deceiving lean strength, Dimingus can finish at the rim thru contact. This season he could prove to be a nightmare mismatch for opponent defenders, blowing by bigs & posting up smaller guards.
Defensively, Diminigus has great potential and adds,” My man to man defense is solid, but I am working hard to improve. The same holds true for help & close out defense.” In live game action we have seen Dimingus cause problems for the opponent by making deflections & steals utilizing his wingspan. Dimingus is a very good rebounder on both sides of the ball using his athleticism and boxing out fundamentals.
Like his Wilson teammates Dimingus works very hard to improve his game 6 days a week. He works on his basketball daily going thru a series of basketball skill drills in addition to a strength & conditioning program. Additionally, Dimingus runs hills, runs in sand and swims all of which have helped him athletically. Dimingus adds. “I want to improve my lateral movement & flexibility. From a basketball standpoint, I want to continually improve my overall skills and my basketball IQ.” Since April Dimingus says,” My shooting, ball handling ,rebounding & defense have gotten better. I am looking forward to playing in our fall league and our regular season. We will be one of the best teams in the Washington, DC area.” This coming Saturday, June 9th, Dimingus has been invited to participate in the prestigious DMV Elite 80 in Bowie MD. This great event features many of the best Washington, DC DMV players from Maryland, NOVA & DC in addition the Baltimore DMV Players from the 2018, 2019, & 2020 classes. We will be covering this event in its entirety which includes skills training, strength & conditioning & scrimmages.
