Prospect Watch: Hayden Sprenkel (2018)
When it comes to putting the ball in the basket, especially from long distance, Class of 2018 guard Hayden Sprenkel of North County has proven to be one of the best in the state.
With one more season left to play, the 6’2″ Sprenkel already owns the school’s career scoring record and is already closing in on the 2,000-point mark. His scoring prowess has earned him interest from colleges such as Columbia College and Lindenwood.
“I’m pretty happy with the record,” Sprenkel said. “Honestly, I’d rather have some district championships and conference championships instead of a scoring record.”
As a junior, Sprenkel averaged an impressive 25 points a game to go along with 5.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.4 steals a game. He connected on 42 percent of his 3-point attempts, which is even more impressive considering the volume of attempts. Sprenkel made 121 of his 287 3-point attempts.
Despite his shooting excellence from long distance, Sprenkel has worked hard to diversify his game and become more than just a shooter. He became much more of a scorer during his junior year with the ability to drive to the basket and create a little more off the dribble. He continues to score big numbers despite seeing all kinds of special defenses and double teams designed to slow him down.
“It has helped out a lot to do more with the ball,” Sprenkel said. “Now, teams can’t just sit out and face-guard me. They have to respect my driving ability. I have worked hard on my dribbling and making moves to the basket. My teammates have helped me quite a big. They get me the ball when I’m open and they set great screens to get me open.”
