Prospect Spotlight: Roman Barnet (2019)
There was a time where the point guard was just a utility player. Your Bring the ball up the floor, call a play, and set up your teammates. The point guard position has evolved and so has the players. Your typical point guard can do it all. Rebound, defend, score and posturize opposing players. You think of Westbrook, Wall, Lillard, Irving just to name a few. Those guards average more points than assist. Now that the paint is wide open, you want to have guards on your roster who can attack the seams and create shot opportunities for themselves and for their teammates.
Roman has a good frame and athletic build. Nice strength. Like the physical tools with this 2018 wing. He has potential to be a plus defender if he wants to lock in on that end of the floor. Solid ball handler that attacks in transition. Streaky shooter that far too often settles for jump shots from three when he doesn’t shoot it at that high of a rate.
Roman is a tough guard that embraces physicality. His biggest strength is taking the ball to the basket whether it is in transition or taking his man off the dribble in the half court. Roman can also take control of a team in the half court and initiate sets. West Seattle is a team that tends to use very little clock when they are not in transition, so Roman has the responsibility of ensuring execution. The rising guard does a good job getting after it defensively with active hands.
With the departure from O’Dea High School boys basketball team and now playing for West Seattle, there are plenty of roles to fill and Barnet feels confident he can help lead his team.
“I definitely look forward to leading this year,” Barnet said. “My role last year was more of a role player position.”
Entering his junior year, Prep Hoops 24th ranked prospect for the class of 2018 in Washington is aiming to improve his play on both sides of the ball, specifically the defensive end.
