Prospect Spotlight: Jarrin Waters (2019)
The Parkville Knights lost a plethora of seniors from last year’s team. Five of which all went on to play collegiately and are gearing up for their freshman seasons. Guards such as Lamonttae Brown, Devin King and Breon Williams all accounted for most of the team’s scoring. With that being said, it means for a ton of voids and roles to be filled by not only returners, but also possible transfers. Jarin Waters transferred from Baltimore City College High School and looks to take on a immediately starting role.
Waters is a 5’11 scoring point guard who can put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways. The lefty is shifty and extremely quick with the ball that helps him keep his match up honest. While he has the ability to hit a three here and there, Waters operates best taking his man off the dribble and pulling up from around 15-18 feet. Such a shot has become extinct for the most part in today’s game, but when you get a player like Waters that can knock it down with efficiency, you don’t complain.
Last year at City, Waters didn’t get many opportunities to showcase his skills, but with head coach Josh Czerski and the Knights he hopes to be the main option offensively. Waters and backcourt mate Quintaun Blizzard (2019) will be a tough and gritty backcourt in Baltimore County. They both still have growing to do in terms of their overall skill, but they’ll challenge some of the other top guards in the conference.
“I want to improve my entire game, but really I’m focusing on being a leader and bringing in wins,” Waters told PrepHoops. “With me being a new player, I want my teammates to trust me that I’ll make the right plays to put us in the best positions to win games.”
Waters utilizes his ability to get by his defender and get into the paint to free up teammates for open looks. Whether it be a kick-out three or a dump pass to a big man for a lay up, usually one is open and if Waters reads the rotation quick enough, he’ll find them.
Waters holds a 3.4 GPA, which tells you that he works just as hard on the floor as he does off. He hopes to major in IT when he gets to college. As of this moment, no colleges are actively recruiting Waters, but now that he has a stage to showcase his skills, it should only be a matter of time.
