Prospect Spotlight: Daryl Mackey Jr. (2019)
Daryl Mackey Jr. might be the best kept secret in Virginia, but he’s very well known locally. The junior, who averaged nearly 20 points per game as a sophomore, is poised for a monster junior year. Listed at six feet, Mackey is long lanky guard with elite athleticism.
“The biggest thing I learned this summer was being more explosive with my layups,” Mackey said. “Coach always told me that I would’t always show my athleticism. I proved that I’m a high level athlete.”
Even though he led the team in scoring as a sophomore, Mackey had a lot of help. West Potomac was loaded with seniors, and he will be expected to step up and be the leader of the team. Mackey admittedly needs to work on being a smarter basketball player, and more of a point guard.
“My ball handling has improved a lot,” Mackey stated. “That’s just what I’ve noticed, and its really noticeable.”
Mackey is reportedly receiving interest from Georgetown and American. He went to several elite camps this summer. Don’t be surprised to see Mackey pick up an offer or two during his junior season, which should be very exciting. What factors will be key in Mackey’s college decision?
“I want to go to a school that can give me a lot of opportunities,” he began. “Help me beyond basketball. Also a decent program, and a decent fan base for school.”
Mackey hit 50 threes as a sophomore for Head Coach David Houston. After scoring eight points in the season opener, he finished the season with 26 consecutive games in double figure scoring. Mackey earned 140 free throw attempts, and made 103. We know teams will do everything they can to try and contain Mackey this year, but we fully expect him to produce at a high level once again.
