PrepHoops Top 250: 2021 Evals
This past weekend was the PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Expo! It was a great opportunity to see some of the top players from around the state and find new prospects. Check out our evals of the prospects at the event! Here is our breakdown of the 2021 prospects in attendance.
SG Ahamad Bynum (Simeon – 2021)
My first opportunity to see highly touted 2021 shooting guard Ahamad Bynum was at the PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Expo. He has built a reputation as one of the top incoming freshman in the state. We saw some of the qualities that other have raved about. Physical kid with a strong upper body and broad shoulders where he can continue to add strength. Plays with an all-out motor. Bynum was a prospect that several of the highly touted 2020 players in attendance raved to me about. He is a beast in transition getting to the rack and finishing through contact. Very explosive with the ball in his hands and attacking downhill. He is a plus rebounder that snatches them and can start the break on his own. Flashy player that sometimes turns the ball over. He likes to be an isolation scorer in one on one situations with his handles and getting to the rim. Jump shot could improve. Showed some flair passing it with a couple nice dishes. Bynum should see minutes for Simeon as a freshman coming off the bench.
G Joshua Smith (OPRF – 2021)
We came away impressed with what this wing brought to the table. At 6’2” he is a great player in transition. Long and lanky prospect that is a very good athlete. Best slashing off the bounce going to the hoop to score. Showed he could stretch the floor with his shooting off the catch. Needs to improve his basketball IQ and be a more willing passer.
C Brian Mathews (DePaul Prep – 2021)
Mathews is a 6’6” back to the basket center that has good size at a young age and a nice frame. Looks like he should continue to grow a few more inches. Projectable big man. Runs the floor fairly well. Defensively can block a shot on the interior. At times he plays somewhat stiff and is slow laterally defending. Definitely some work to do, but he has the frame and upside to monitor his progress going forward!
