Prep Hoops Top 250 Arizona First Team
The Top 250 Expo went great. There were a number of talented players and skilled coaches in attendance at the event. Now that the event has ended, we will be giving a first team, second team, third team, and honorable mentions list, in addition to all of the other in-depth articles about the event. Here is the first team list.
MVP
Derek Williams 6’0 PG Tucson
Williams is typically known for his knockdown shooting. However, this weekend, he made a living in the paint. He attacked the rim with aggression and got to the spot he wanted with ease. In addition to possessing increased strength, Williams has elite level speed that makes it impossible for guards to stay in front. Further, he has a tremendous handle on the ball and a great feel for the game.
First Team
Otis Frazier 6’5 PG/SG Buckeye
Frazier could have easily been named MVP. His elite level length made him a nightmare for opposing guards. It felt like every other play that he was exploding by the defender and finishing with a bang. In addition, he shot the basketball at an extremely high rate from 3. Frazier’s stock is on the rise in a big way.
Dominic Gonzalez 6’3 PG/SG Ironwood
Gonzalez absolutely shot the lights out this weekend. He demonstrated an ability to utilize free dribbles and elevate over the defender to hit an array of difficult 3s and mid-range jumpers. Moreover, his length was deadly as he was able to utilize it to finish in the paint whenever he wanted.
Ajang Aguek 6’7 SF/PF Ironwood
Aguek was a walking “And 1” all weekend. He was finshing at will and living above the rim. Further, he showed an ability to stretch the floor and shoot it at a high level from deep. Aguek is another lengthy player whose stock keeps rising. He did plenty this weekend to demonstrate why that is the case.
Josh Johnson 5’7 PG Maricopa
Johnson is a scoring machine. Despite his size, he is able to get into the paint at will. He has elite level speed and explosion to go with tremendous change of pace and direction with his moves. Further, the higher the degree of difficulty on the shot, the higher percentage he shoots it. He elevates well on his shot and is not phased by opponents contesting. College coaches: Do not be deterred by his size. He is as tough of an on ball defender and play maker as there is in this state.
Grant Greabell 6’3 SG Estrella Foothills
Greabell has improved his ball handling greatly. On multiple occasions, he demonstrated an improved ability to freeze the defender and explode out of the move. His lateral quickness has been one of the biggest question marks I have heard. However, if he continues to improve his ball handling and side to side movement, he is a big time prospect as he can shoot the basketball with anyone in this state.
