Open Gym Notebook: Morristown
The month of September brings with it the beginning of open gym season. Over the next month-plus, we will be out on the road checking in on different high school programs from around the state. Here are our notes from our trip to Morristown.
Last Season: This past season, Morristown was one of the best 1A teams in the state. They went 17-9 with a loss to Indianapolis Lutheran in the Sectional Finals. Losing sophomore Logan Laster hurt in the mid part of the season.
Biggest Changes: There aren’t many changes from last season to this season. They bring back everyone except for Garrett Redd, Gerald Hutton, and Daniel Brenneman. The big change is they have an incoming freshman that could step up and be a fourth player in the mix to contribute at the Varsity level this season and give them four really solid players.
Player To Watch: Eli Streeval (Jr.) – While senior Hayden Langkabel will be the guy that draws the most attention, Morristown will need their other players to step up and Eli could be on the verge of taking a bigger step in production. His athleticism has really showed up recently and he’s a guy that adds a different dimension to this team. If he can capitalize on his athleticism and scoring ability, this team could really be able to handle the tougher teams on their schedule.
New Face On Roster: Kyle Crim (Fr.) – Crim is the new freshman we referenced earlier. He’s a tall guard with some length and he will get an opportunity to compete from Day 1. He’s the one guy that could bring more depth to this team from a year ago. Given the fact that they already have three talented upperclassmen, Morristown could really be among the best 1A teams at the end of the year.
Expectations: Last season, having 17 wins should have meant getting past Sectional Finals. This year, with the roster being mostly upperclassmen, there really aren’t any excuses. They have depth that most 1A or 2A teams don’t have. Their schedule lines up to give them every opportunity to win. There isn’t a game on their schedule that they will be the underdogs except maybe Northeastern and Shelbyville. They are among the best 1A teams on paper and they should make a deep run in the State Tournament.
