Maryland/DC 2019 Rankings Overview
Here’s a broad overview of our updated rankings, taking a look at some of the trends we’ve seen so far. Stay tuned for more in depth breakdowns of the 2019 class, and 2020 rankings!
A NEW NUMBER ONE
The absence of the Mitchell twins in the DMV leaves a void at the top spot. Justin Moore, who missed a majority of his sophomore year due to injury, is close to full strength, and is a great candidate for the number one spot. Before he was injured, the talented combo guard was playing at a very high level for the Stags, and is poised to continue right where he left off.
SUMMER STOCK BOOSTERS
#3 | CASEY MORSELL | ST. JOHN’S | PREVIOUS RANK: #9
Has any player locally had a bigger summer than Casey Morsell? He made big shots, and most importantly won a ton of games. The offers have come flowing in, and we only expect his recruitment to continue its expansion.
#7 | JAMES BISHOP | MOUNT ST. JOSEPH | PREVIOUS RANK: #14
James Bishop is coming off a fantastic summer on the UAA circuit with Team Thrill, and is expected to play a major role in a very good back court at Mount St. Joe’s. The lefty is a gym rat who continues to improve, and is poised for a very productive junior year.
#8 | KAMARI WILLIAMS | ST. ANDREW’S | PREVIOUS RANK: #20
Kamari Williams is a player who had some nice moments as a sophomore, and followed it up with an excellent summer on the grassroots circuit with 6th Man Warriors. The long lanky 6-foot-7 wing, who has proven to be a dead-eye three point shooter, is still just scratching the surface of his potential.
#10 | ANWAR GILL | GONZAGA | PREVIOUS RANK: #18
After missing some time during grassroots season due to injury, Anwar Gill came back with a vengeance during summer league. The shifty southpaw has a quick first step, and is very crafty around the basket. Gill will likely factor into a major role for the Purple Eagles this season.
#12 | LOGAN CURTIS | CALVERT HALL | PREVIOUS RANK: #26
Logan Curtis is coming off an excellent summer grassroots campaign with Team BBC. The sharpshooting wing has good size, and can mix it up offensively. Curtis will likely have plenty of opportunities to show what he can do at Calvert Hall this year.
POSSIBLE BREAKOUT CANDIDATES
#9 | YAVUZ GULTEKIN | JOHN CARROLL
In a very short time, Yavuz Gultekin has managed to take the DMV hoops community by storm. The athletic 6’7 lefty, who will be a mainstay in the front court for John Carroll this year, is definitely a player to watch moving forward.
#11 | JAHMIR YOUNG | DEMATHA
Jahmir Young is expected to start at the point for what has a chance to be a very good DeMatha team. The tough left-handed lead guard, who had a solid sophomore year at Ryken, is a sleeper.
#14 | ZIGGY REID | ST. PAUL’S
Ziggy Reid is quite clearly committed to being great, and that’s part of what makes him such an intriguing prospect. The 6-foot-5 wing shoots the lights out, and is becoming more skilled and athletic as he continues to grow into his body.
#20 | NENDAH TARKE | BULLIS
Nendah Tarke is definitely a high level athlete. Another thing that we love about him is that he plays hard at all times. Tarke is a big reason why Bullis could be sneaky good, and in good shape to defend their IAC crown.
#31 | JASON GIBSON | SIDWELL FRIENDS
Jason Gibson has been a big time scorer off the ball for Sidwell in the past, but he will finally get the opportunity to show what he can do while on the ball. The skilled lead guard, who is considered among the DMV’s elite sharpshooters, is a high IQ player who will do whatever it takes to win.
