Devan Cambridge Recruiting Update (2019)
Two years ago, former Class of 2016 shooting guard Desmond Cambridge excelled at Ensworth under Head Coach Ricky Bowers, but he was young for his grade and frequently deferred to Jordan Bone (Tennessee). Underneath the vernier of the supporting act Desmond hid innate athleticism, competent slashing, and the capacity for elite defense.
Few regional teams noticed Cambridge’s untapped talent and wonderful determination. Cambridge took advantage of a prep year with The Hun School (NJ) and college scouts finally spotted the 6-foot-4 off-guard. Deservedly the northeast scouts bounced with enthusiasm. Further, because he attended such a rigorous academic institution as Ensworth and handled his classwork Desmond opened up extra opportunities.
Ivy League programs came calling.
With less than a month before the Early Signing Period Brown, Dartmouth, Boston University, and Trevecca Nazarene hopped in. Cambridge picked Brown last fall and expects to fight for rotation minutes this his freshman year in Providence, Rhode Island.
Desmond’s younger brother wrapped his first junior season with named the Main Street Media of Tennessee Sumner County Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Like his brother before him, Devan Cambridge reclassed in line with players his age. Now a 2019 target Cambridge attracted college attention.
Believe Prep (Athens, TN) starting wing Devan Cambridge is already a mid-major target heading in to his second junior season, but an ACC evaluation ratcheted up the process.
Georgia Tech came to evaluate Cambridge earlier this month. They also joined Austin Peay, East Tennessee State and Kentucky State by offering the junior wing.
Many of these teams spotted him during AAU.
“They came to this tournament I played in Indiana,” said Cambridge. “And then, with ETSU, I went to their Elite Camp.”
The younger Cambridge does have some favorite schools at this early juncture. He likes to watch Kentucky and hopes to visit Villanova unofficially some time.
“It is really what is the best fit for me,” said Cambridge. “I want to be in the SEC really. (I also want) to see how the campus is, how the team plays, how the coaches treat you.”
For player teammates and friends compare to Tracey McGrady this will be a big winter season. High school basketball on the Grind Session affords Believe Prep players like Devan multiple scouting opportunities in-season.
Fan of the Game
NBA basketball tends to be the only thing high school hoopers watch, but Devan has a unique take on the pinnacle of basketball.
“That was true at first, but then I started to realize, like really, that in the NBA they are not really competing,” said Devan Cambridge. “In college they are really trying to compete to get in the NBA, so I watch more of that now.”
He has over a year and a half to pick a school, but Devan might continue ahead of his peers. He is 6-foot-6, accustomed to leading, and smart. With a 3.4 GPA you will see high-academic suitors swarm.
What, if anything, did Devan Cambridge learn from his older brother Desmond’s recruitment?
“Just like to be patient and look into everything and make sure you are making the right decision on where you want to go.”
