DaVae Hughley Recruiting Update (2018)
DaVae Hughley (East Hamilton) spent a profitable summer with Team NLP 17u. Entering his senior season Hughley has talked with several college coaches.
“A couple people have been talking to me,” said Hughley. “They would like me at a “3” or a “2”.
Hughley would be a disruptive defensive presence on the wing. It depends what level he lands as to how easily that acclimation process would be.
“Lee has been talking to me,” said DaVaeHughley. “Spring Hill (AL) also. And Alabama A&M.”
The Lee University staff continues to recruit the state of Tennessee diligently. Head Coach Bubba Smith and Assistant Coach Cole Rose took a look at Hughley this summer.
“Lee (Assistant Coach) is saying that they are going to be watching me this year and coming to some of the (East Hamilton) games this year to see what I can do,” said Hughley.
“Lee saw me over the summer,” said DaVae Hughley. “I went to their basketball camp. I sent some game clips to Alabama A&M and Spring Hill, so they really didn’t get to see me over the summer. I also forgot Tennessee Tech. I went there and he liked the way I played. He said he would come watch some of my games.”
Tennessee Tech also identified Junior Clay and Mullek Bradford as Chattanooga-area players worthy of tracking. Both players were featured by PrepHoopsTN earlier this month. Between Team NLP, Chattanooga Elite, and now Bobby Maze Elite the Chattanooga/Cleveland region is really developing players better by the year.
DaVae attended Tennessee Tech’s Elite Camp just before AAU tipped in early July.
“I felt pretty good,” said Hughley. “I felt like I was the top one there, to be honest. He pulled me to the side and said I had great potential. I felt I was pretty much of the top level of guys there. I talked to the head coach.”
I thought the school was pretty good. I liked their gym. The school as a whole I felt like it would kind of be homey. I had a good vibe there.
What skills does Hughley already demonstrate?
DaVae Hughley is adept at finishing under the rim. Many of his converted buckets are the result of two-three dribble drives or powering up from the block. The future for Hughley will be interesting because he has the size for a college wing or a shorter forward.
Ideally Hughley would prove his ability to guard elite wings and then use his physicality to create a matchup problem for defenders.
The 6-foot-4 senior is surrounded by a deep squad. Judging by the roster East Hamilton should have an inciting season. These are a few of the better players:
G Justin Dozier (2018)
F DaVae Hughley (2018)
G Vandrele Wilson (2019)
G Cameron Montgomery (2019)
F Drew Williams (2020)
Together they hope to improve upon a special 25-11 year.
AAU
In what will likely be his final AAU season Hughley was satisfied overall.
“I feel like my AAU season was good,” said DaVae Hughley. “It could have been better. I rolled my ankle early in the season, at a basketball camp. I was kind of excited that we won Nationals.”
Hughley stands 198-pounds, rock solid for a high school hooper. He uses that strength all summer to deter aspiring slashers.
“My role on the team really was to play lockdown D and score whenever we needed a bucket.”
He is spending September preparing for East Hamilton’s 2017-2018 season and sending out highlight packages to college coaches. Take a look yourself at Hughley’s game.
