Kimball’s got a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming winter season. Weston Hine’s development over the summer might be the greatest one.
Hine, a 6-foot-8 center, spent the spring and summer playing grassroots with Comets Little, going up against talented teams and big men practically every contest.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Hine. “I think the whole season went really good. Some of the guys I’d known from surrounding schools but it was great to be able to meet a lot of new guys and play with different, talented players.”
Hine’s still developing as an offensive player but he’s shown the tools to be productive without requiring a lot of touches. He’s active on the baseline, attacking the offensive glass and moving to be available as an outlet for dump offs at the rim. His defensive ability is what’s gotten him noticed to this point as he’s not only long but also mobile enough to defend from the perimeter to the rim.
“The whole experience was great for me,” said Hine of the AAU season. “I could definitely tell I got a lot better. The competition was great. I’d go around and play against some of the top players in the state and then go back and play closer to home and you definitely what kind of difference it made.”
Hine’s got upside still to tap into and college coaches have taken notice.
“Concordia is one that has reached out that I’ve talked to,” Hine said. “A number of others have been in contact with letters of interest or though my coaches.”
