Recruiting Report: Tom Welch (2019)
Naperville Central 2019 power forward Tom Welch is one of the faster rising post prospects in the rising junior class. Welch brings a solid skill level to the table along with mobility at the four man spot. He can handle it some facing up and has a soft touch when scoring around the hoop.
How was his sophomore campaign?
“It went great. Started off playing on varsity as a sophomore was a little scary, but as the year went on my teammates were great leaders. They allowed me to feel more comfortable and get better throughout the season. We had a good run in the playoffs. We are hoping to get back there next year.”
He was able to get back with those guys in June to prep for next season.
“It went good. We made it to many championship games. We didn’t win all of them, but got a couple. I got a chance to be a leader.”
Welch spoke about how he is trying to mold his game.
“I have been trying to become more of a wing player and be more versatile. Transferring from a post to a wing has been the big thing. That has been the focus of my training.”
How did it go playing with the Illinois Wolves on the 16U level this spring and summer?
“It is very competitive in the UAA. It pushes you to be the best. You have to play well with colleges looking at you. It pushes everyone to play their best and play as a team.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“I have a few schools looking at me. Right now I am trying to figure out what my major will be. School comes first always. That is a big priority in recruiting. Miami (OH), Loyola, Holy Cross, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois, and a few others are showing interest.”
Western Illinois extended him an offer in June.
“I like the program because they make me feel comfortable. The staff seems to like me a lot and I like them. Their major of Parks and Rec is something I could do when I get older. I like the campus. I would like to see a football game to see how the students are there.”
After the July live period Welch also landed his second offer from Kent State.
