Recruiting Report: Savion Gallion (2019)
Thurgood Marshall Academy (D.C.) is coming off a very successful season finishing with a 20-12 record and an appearance in the city championship. Although they came up short in that game against Cesar Chavez, the experience was vital for the future of the program. Now with a big portion of their core returning, they’ll look to not only post an improved overall record, but also be the ones hoisting up the city championship trophy when it’s all said and done.
2019 guard Savion Gallion is going to be a key piece to reaching their goals in 2017-18. Gallion will be the team’s leading scorer with the loss of senior Lonnie Gordon. Last season, Gallion averaged 15.1 points per game and had four games in which he finished with 20 or more points. His season-high 34 points came in the second game of the season in a 80-33 win against Luke C. Moore.
While scoring is definitely Gallion’s strong point, the 6-3 guard can do many other things on the floor to impact a game. His long arms allow him to be a good rebounding guard. Gallion tallied eight games with more than five rebounds last season. He can also use his scoring ability to his advantage in helping set up teammates. That is still an aspect of Gallion’s game he wants to improve and has been working on this summer as he’s played AAU with the District Basketball Club.
“I’ve been working on just making smarter plays,” Gallion told PrepHoops. “Making the extra pass when the defense is focused on me.”
Gallion isn’t only a threat on the offensive side of the floor, he takes pride in his ability to cause havoc on defense as well. At 6-3 with good length and swift feet, he can often times be a pest to his match up in full court pressure situations. He has the anticipation skills to deflect passes and as I saw him in action this past weekend, he reads passing lanes well to create easy transition lay ups for himself.
Even though Gallion is a scorer, the thing that stuck out to me was when he isn’t hitting shots his effort doesn’t change. He plays with great energy and also continues to be positive to his teammates.
In terms of offers, Gallion has two offers from Division II schools such as Bowie State and Virginia Union. UMBC, Towson, James Madison, Holy Cross and American are all showing interest in the rising junior.
