Recruiting Report: Phillip Dromgoole (2018)
The Minnesota Comets fielded three high-quality teams during the grassroots season. Comets Little might not have had the caliber of raw talent as a couple of the others, but they enjoyed a good amount of success nonetheless.
St. Cloud Apollo point guard Phillip Dromgoole Jr. was a catalyst for Comets Little during the spring and summer, combining pace-pushing offense with ballhawking defense.
“It went really good,” Dromgoole said of the season. “Got some interest and playing with Comets helped me a whole lot as a player. It did a lot for me. It helped me get better. The organization and I just learned a lot about the game.”
Dromgoole has solid size for a point guard, standing 6-foot-1 with a strong frame and long arms. His defense – especially off the ball – is top-notch. He’s great in the passing lanes and his length and agility are especially useful as they allow him to defend multiple positions on the perimeter. He’s still developing as a point guard and his first instinct is to speed the game up as much as possible. That’s an asset a lot of the time because he creates scoring opportunities for his teammates.
“I think the main thing I got better at was getting my teammates more involved,” said Dromgoole. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a season where I distributed the ball like this. . Coach Little was a great coach. He helped me learn a lot about how to stay disciplined at key moments in a game and value possessions.”
Dromgoole’s play over the summer caught the attention of a number of local schools.
“Concordia, St. Scholastica, Hamline and Waldorf have all reached out to me,” said Dromgoole. “Waldorf invited me down to a camp. I haven’t taken any visits yet but hopefully get something scheduled sometime in the fall. I’m hoping to draw more interest still too so I’m going to keep working and trying to get better.”
