Recruiting Report: Jameel Morton (2018)
A 6-foot guard from Fort Vancouver High school, Jameel Morton is starting to see his recruitment rise a bit.
Three schools shave reached out to him in some form, and he says it doesn’t matter what level of college ball he gets to, he just wants to play.
“I’ve talked to George Fox a lot on the phone, they keep in contact with me. And I’ve gotten mail from St. Mary’s (CA), talking about how they wanted me to go to their their elite camp,” said Morton.
“I’ve gotten letters from Eastern Washington and went to their elite camp, and talked to their coaches and got to practice with their team. That was fun.”
Morton added: “I’m mainly just trying to play college basketball, D3, D2, D1, just whatever college fits me. Like how I interact with the players, how I interact with the coach, things like that are important to me”
A scorer, who is best when getting to the rim, Morton defined his skill-set in his own words to PHWA.
“As a player, I would say my best strength is attacking the basket and shooting. But I also like to get my guys involved and make them better,” he said.
“Also, I take pride in my defense, I would say I’m one of the best guards around with my defense. Also, leadership is something I like, and losing is one of my biggest pet peeves. I don’t like losing.”
Morton did not play grassroots ball this past summer, just a couple games with the Vancouver Grizzlies 17U here and there.
“I didn’t really do much with AAU, I’ve just been training on my own and playing with my school team,” said Morton.
“Mainly, I’ve been working on getting stronger. Right now I’m a little thin, but I’ve been working on getting stronger which will help when I’m attacking the basket.”
He added “And I’ll say I’ve been working on my bounce. I’m trying to get some more dunks in this season.”
Last season, as a junior, Morton had a big impact with bis team, averaging 14 points per game. This year, his role will be much the same.
“This year, we lost a couple seniors, so my goal is to take over games more,” said Morton.
“My role won’t be too different than last year. I’m just trying to lead my team to the state tournament. That’s our big goal for this year.”
