Recruiting Report: Hayden Welling (2019)
A 6-foot-8 forward from Corner Canyon, Hayden Welling has two years left to see his recruitment come together, but has already caught the eye of several in-state Division I programs.
That’s been his goal all along.
“My goal is to get on the radar with all the Utah schools, and I think I’ve done a good job at that. I’ve been reached out to by a couple in-state schools, and have been asked to come workout for them,” said Welling.
“I’ve had BYU reach out to me. I’ve had Utah Valley reach out to me, also Utah State and Weber State. It’s mostly texts messages, invitations to camps, or them asking me to come workout with them.”
As he heads into his junior season with the Chargers, Welling says his goals are to simply play his game, and the recruitment should follow.
“I’m just going to go and do my thing and look into the recruitment when it comes,” he said. “My goal is to play next level, but I’m just going to do my thing and try and get as much exposure as I can.”
Already a solid post, Welling says he’s working to diversify his skill-set, and extend his range out to the perimeter.
“Some of my strengths are just working inside, I have some good strength inside and can put the ball in the hole from inside or my mid-range game,” said Welling.
“I guess I’m pretty quick with the ball and I have decent handles, and can get to the rim from the outside off the attack. I’m working on my jump-shot and extending my game to the outside more.”
He had plenty of opportunities this past spring and summer to work on diversifying his skill-set with Vivint Swoosh 16U.
“I feel like it was a great year for me and my team. And I thought it was a great role for me to be a leader on the team,” said Welling. “We did great this summer, and it really helped me become a better player and we got better as a team.”
Now, just months removed from his junior season, his goals are simple.
“I’m expecting to help my team,” said Welling. “And help myself develop and do well this year.”
