Recruiting Report 2018: Justin Nwosu
Justin Nwosu, 6’5″, SF, 210, St. Andrews Episcopal Lions HS Potomac, MD, 2018.
Grassroots Team: The District Basketball Club
For the last 3 years Justin has made constant improvements to his game playing for The District Basketball Club & St. Andrews Episcopal HS. This summer he received his 2nd college offer from D2 Millersville University who plays in the powerful Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Justin is planning to visit Millersville in September where he will see St. Andrew alum Marcus Adkison who led the MU Marauders in scoring last year as a sophomore. In May he visited Concordia (NY) where Justin holds an offer. Additionally, Justin is receiving interest from Gannon, New Haven, West Virginia Wesleyan, & Radford. This is a big season for Justin & St. Andrews HS who play in the powerful MAC Conference which includes teams from Northern, VA, Washington, DC & MD. We believe 6 of the 7 teams will battle for MAC Title this year won by Sidwell Friends last season. As a starter last season Justin averaged 14 ppg, 7 rpg & shot 75% from the foul line.
Justin is a very strong forward who can play inside/out & is an excellent rebounder. District Basketball 17U head Coach Walter Booth says,”I would describe Justin as being extremely versatile & similar to a Swiss Army Knife in how he can effect the game in so many ways to help his team win. Justin has a great mid range game & can bully guards & take bigs off the bounce from the perimeter which makes him hard to check.” Justin is a player Coaches covet because of his hustle, winning attitude, team play & versatility. His Coaches say, “Justin will adapt very easily into his team role on any potential team in the future due to his versatility & coach-ability. He will do whatever it takes to get a win.”
We chatted with Justin this weekend & we asked him about his offensive skill set, “I like the mid range game where I can score off cuts or off the dribble. Driving to the basket is another strong point & I can finish thru contact if needed. My very good court vision allows me to read the court & if I have the ball I can make the correct reads & progressions. Throughout the game I bring energy & the ability to hit the offensive glass & get rebounds. I like the pick & roll & I can power up inside the paint. My ball handling is solid & I can bring the ball up court versus pressure if needed. I can hit the 3 pointer, but I usually score 15 feet & in.”
On defense Justin can cause major problems for the opposing team. He adds, “I can guard multiple positions & rebound very well. My wingspan is about 6’10” & I use my length for deflections & steals in the passing lanes. It helps me with my closeouts & help defense. I like to play tough on ball defense & when we zone press I am either at the top or middle of a 1-3-1 or other defense.” Justin is a very good athlete who possesses very good speed & quickness with the ability to dunk with both hands.
This spring & summer marked the 3rd consecutive year Justin played for the District Basketball Club. He adds,”Ever since I have been with the DBC, our team goals were set & our DBC teams accomplished them. This season I improved my overall basketball skills, jump shot, help defense, & becoming a vocal leader.”Justin works out with St. Andrews Assistant Coach Derrick Harvey at school & his father. He adds,”Since our season ended at St. Andrews I have improved my strength, agility, explosion, ball handling & finishing at the rim thru contact. Additionally, I have been running up to 4 miles at a time, mixing in sprints & jumping rope which are helping me in my athleticism & conditioning. Throughout the rest of my basketball career I will be working on my basketball skills & strength & conditioning 12 months a year to improve my game.”
In the classroom Justin carries a 2.9 GPA & he is interested in Engineering & Business Management for potential majors in college. Justin says his father (Godwin), mother (Constance) & his Aunt Viola are great family role models. Additionally, Justin mentions St. Andrews HC Kevin Jones, Assistant Coach Derrick Harvey, & DBC Coaches & Founders Walter Booth & Devin Williams in addition to all the great coaches at DBC as role models on & off the court.
