Recruiting Report 2018: Cameron Carter
Cameron Carter, 5’9″, PG, 2018. Our Lady of Good Counsel HS Falcons Olney, MD.
Grassroots Team: Team Takeover Orange:
Cameron enters his 4th season with Good Counsel HS and his second with new Head Coach CJ Kissal who is a 1991 graduate. The Falcons play in the powerful WCAC Conference & wins have been hard to come by for Good Counsel in recent years. Their last winning record was in 2009/10 & in years past Good Counsel was a factor in the WCAC. At the conclusion the MD Elite Summer League Cameron says, “I have a much better understanding of our offense & I know we can move up in conference standings.” We were very impressed with the energy, focus, togetherness, intelligence and toughness the Falcons played with this spring & summer.
We saw Cameron at the DeMatha BSN Summer League and MD Elite Summer Leagues in which he performed very well. In the MD Elite All Star game he displayed excellent ball handling & facilitation skills and we awarded him as Best Floor General. During summer league play Cameron impressed us with his strength, athleticism and basketball IQ. He has a very powerful physique & he can get in the lane at will with power & crafty moves. His shot mechanics and elevation are excellent and Cameron’s range is beyond the 3 point line.
Defensively, Cameron can be a big distraction to his opponent. He can pick up his opponent full court applying tough ball hawking on ball defense. Cameron has fantastic hand/eye coordination and he can be marked down for 2-3 steals per game. His anticipation is exceptional & bigs have a very hard time setting screens on him because he beats them to the spot & runs thru the screen attempts. Cameron always gives great effort and he is in a fine tuned & conditioned athlete. He just does not tire despite being one of the hardest workers on the court.
When we discussed Cameron’s basketball strengths, he adds” I am very quick off the dribble & I can get to the rim. My mid-range game is very good and I can shoot 3 pointers from the left or right off the dribble, but I want to perfect my long distance shooting this summer. Will Flowers works with me on my jump shot and strength & conditioning which are constantly improving. My ball handling is very good & a strength of my game. My Trainer Patrick Robinson helps me with my ball handling & finishing moves at the basket. Thru our hard work I have become very fast with my dribble & I can beat my defender with speed, power, moves & intelligence.”
Playing for Good Counsel this summer & coordinating his training with the Falcon’s offensive & defensive philosophies, Cameron says,”My decision making has gotten better by understanding Coach Kissal’s system and what he wants. After improving my overall basketball skills I apply them to Coach Kissal’s philosophies. On offense I want to get my teammates involved & open. I like to dribble penetrate or kick out to an open player on the wings, or a big running the baseline. My GC Coaches trust me in being a high basketball IQ team player & facilitator and realizing when I should score.”
Since the AAU and summer leagues have concluded, Cameron will continue to work out with his Trainers until the season begins in December. Additionally, he goes to nearby Good Counsel to work out. At GC Cameron runs the track, works on his legs, uses the shooting machine and runs pick up. Another area he is honing is utilizing his left hand more to finish at the rim which Cameron will achieve.
In the classroom Cameron carries a 4.01 GPA with honors which is exceptional. In college Cameron wants to major in Biology or Material Engineering. He credits his parents Michelle & Darrin Carter as his role models who supply great support on & off the court.
Currently we project Cameron in the D2 range, However, we believe his athleticism, basketball IQ, skill set and determination could translate to a low D1 mid major this coming season. We will be covering Good Counsel this year with game reports & new Recruiting Reports for their players. In our opinion the Falcons will pull off some upsets in the WCAC this coming season & have the potential to vastly improve upon last seasons record. We are excited & looking to forward to watching Good Counsel play this season.
