Prospect Spotlight: Matthew Chapman (2019)
One of the more under-rated big men in Kansas, Blue Valley Northwest 2019 Matthew Chapman is putting together a big summer for MoKan Select 16U squad.
A versatile, inside-outside 6’7 forward, Chapman can play with his back to the basket, or on the perimeter where he has a good jumper and can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket.
“I really take pride in my defense because I can guard any position,” Chapman said. “I get many rebounds on both sides of the floor.”
Chapman split time a year ago between the varsity and junior varsity, gaining valuable experience on both levels. He competed in practice every day against a talented Blue Valley Northwest front line that went on to win a Class 6A state championship.
“I liked it because I got to be a leader for JV but also got build and learn from the players and coaches on varsity,” Chapman said.
Chapman hit the ground running with MoKan Select where he began practicing the morning after the Huskies won state.
“After that we practiced 3-4 times every weekend,” Chapman said. “The first couple practices didn’t go well because nobody knew each other and we weren’t talking. But eventually we were forced to communicate and everything got better. When school ended we stopped so we could focus on school ball. I have been using most of my summer trying to develop myself as a player all-around.
“All I hope is that all the hard work pays off, whether it’s success on the court or even looks from schools.”
Chapman says his parents have had the biggest impact on his basketball career to date.
“They support me through everything,” Chapman said. “My dad is responsible for most of my development because he always watches my games and tells me what I need to work on. He gives me drills and even takes film so I can see what I need to change.”
A fan of the Cavs’ Kevin Love, Chapman says he tries to implement some of the forward’s skills into his own game.
“He can hit open shots and handle the ball,” Chapman said. “But, he also isn’t afraid to get physical, go in the lane, and get rebounds.”
Chapman has not yet received any interest from schools but says he hopes he will gain interest this upcoming season.
