Prospect Spotlight: Amanuel Gebreziabher (2019)
A 5-foot-8 combo guard from Mount Rainier, Amanuel Gebreziabher is on the verge of becoming a breakout player in the Evergreen State.
After a nice sophomore season with the Rams, he’s spent his spring and summer improving, and defined his current set of skills to PHWA.
“I think my best strength is setting my teammates up to be better. I’m a pass-first guard, and I like the ball to be in my hands when the game is getting serious. And when the game is on the line, I like to be in control,” said Gebreziabher.
“I need to work on my 3-point shooting, and just being more open-minded, like with game situations and how to handle them. I need to learn how to be an extension of the coach on the court.”
This offseason, he did not play with a grassroots team. Instead, he worked out with his brother on his own time.
“I’ve been training with my brother every morning at 5:30, and I shoot 100 free-throws to start every morning, just waiting for the season to come,” said Gebreziabher.
Last season, as a sophomore, Gebreziabher started, and averaged 10.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4 assists per game.
“I think individually I played great,” he said. “Being a 15 year-old on the varsity was hard, but it was a great challenge and I did pretty well.”
And he played well enough for his recruitment to start up on the early side of things.
“Over this past year, I’ve gotten letters from Montana, Corban University, and St. Martin’s,” said Gebreziabher.
“I’m just taking it one day at a time, getting better, developing a little more and working on being more efficient.”
