Q’s Third Team – All Grassroots Selection
The point of this article is to include the best five prospects from this past summer in Washington in a all grass roots type of ranking. There were plenty of chances to see some of these young men play in some of the most competitive tournament play I’ve seen in some years. This year welcomed plenty of players who will eventually make noise at the next level. But as there always is, some players stood above the rest.
So, below, on our All Tournament 3rd Team, we’ve decided to recognize the players we found ourselves most impressed with at this past spring and summer sessions.
3rd TEAM
PG – Eddie Turner III, Class of 2018 guard standing at 6’0 hailing from Garfield High School turned heads this summer and his stock is rising each game. Eddie Tuner is one of the more dynamic scorers in the Class of 2018. From the looks of his game at the showcase, he has been working on his jumper from deep and his court awareness. He knocked down the long ball with consistency throughout the day. He also showed his passing skills with ball-screen action. Eddie has added strength to his frame which allows him to finish better in around the basket.
SG – TREY LAWRENCE, Class of 2018 combo guard standing 6’5 hailing from Glacier Peak High School, caught my eye at the Saint Martins College High School Team Camp. The 6’5 rising senior does many things well on the court, and is a tremendous athlete. “I am mainly a drive first type of guy, but I love the mid range and I also will take you baseline. Its all hustle on defense making sure my man does not score, grabbing every rebound, and put back for a dunk!” Trey stated. “On the court or even on the bench a lot of people may not see the way I pick my teammates up. Encouraging them to keep playing hard and focused on the next play.” One thing I really like about Trey is that he involves himself within the flow of the game, and doesn’t command any play calls. He finds ways to produce no matter what. Trey’s versatility on both ends of the floor is very evident. He can defend almost any position.
SF – Colten Nortop, Class of 2019 guard standing at 6’4 hailing from and Richland High School standout has been turning heads this summer. With a long wingspan and a deadly outside shot. Programs across the country will look to utilize this young mans services. Colten Northop is one of the most underrated guards in the state of Washington. He is long, athletic and has the ability to handle the ball against small guards. In some of his more recent tournament play he has shown that he can also knock down tough shots in tough situations. With an increasing skill-set and a great coaching staff at his disposal he will continue to build on his abilities.
PF – Jaden McDaniel’s, Class of 2019 forward standing at 6’8 hailing from is a special talent coming out of Federal Way. He is a lanky post player who can also play small forward. He has a nice touch for mid-range jumpers, with the ability to take less than mobile forwards off the dribble to get easy buckets at the rim. He’s a solid rebounder and is pretty athletic, finishing plays with dunks that get the crowd excited.
C –Riley Sorn, Class of 2018 center standing 7 feet 3 inches, hailing from Richland High School. Riley is the tallest basketball player in the state of Washington. He has a great defensive presence, meeting lay ups and dunks at the rim for blocked shots. With his height and length alone, it will make shots harder for opposing player. “I think my biggest strength on the court is that I am a rim is that I am a rim protector. Most teams hesitate when attacking the basket when I’m in the middle because they know that most shots I am going to get to. The coaching staff at Washington Supreme have made that very clear that my primary role is just that.” said Sorn.
***I would have to say the most impressive player out of this group was hands down Jaden McDaniel’s. He has emerged as a high-major prospect this spring while playing with Seattle Rotary EYBL on the Under Armour circuit. Jaden McDaniel’s is a 6-8, 175-pound Power Forward from Federal Way, WA. He is ranked No. 155 in the country by 247Sports. McDaniel’s is the No. 3 recruit in Federal Way, WA (98003) State and is the No. 36 Power Forward in the nation. McDaniel’s has a 247Sports rating of 70, making him a 2-star prospect***
