JULY STOCK RISERS: Point Guards (2018)
Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at who raised their stock during the July NCAA evaluation periods.
JULY STOCK RISERS: Point Guards (2018)
Mason Alexander, 6’0, PG, 2018, McPherson (Kan.) Kansas Pray N Play
One of the state’s premier returning point guards, Alexander is a smooth left hander that can handle the ball and create his own shot off the bounce. Brings good leadership skills to the court, can set up teammates or score himself. Has a smooth left handed shooting stroke from distance.
Koriyon Carr, 5’11, PG, 2018, Topeka West (Kan.) Top City
Carr is an under-rated guard who hasn’t gotten a lot of attention but brings quickness and the ability to put the ball in the basket to the court. He can score at all three levels, can shoot from the 3-point line, get to the basket and has a nice floater that he uses to get over bigger players.
Jeremiah Garrett, 5’11, PG, 2018, Bishop Miege (Kan.) KC Pacers
Garrett was largely relegated to a reserve role a year ago for a deep and talented Bishop Miege squad. But this summer he has proven to be a player NAIA and others should probably keep an eye on. He is a tough, strong guard who plays hard and brings a bulldog mentality to the court. He is terrific getting to the basket and does a good job of drawing fouls and getting to the foul line.
Garrett Luinstra, 6’1, PG, 2018, Free State (Kan.) MoKan Select
One of the state’s true up-and-coming players, Luinstra had a break out year as a junior but with Free State suffering big losses to graduation, Luinstra will be counted on even more this season. He is a smooth guard with a good handle, the ability to get into the lane and is a standout perimeter shooter.
Cody McNerney, 6’0, SG, 2018, Wichita Collegiate (Kan.) Wichita Padres
McNerney is a strong, physical guard with terrific size who can really light up the scoreboard with his outside shooting. He can play either guard spot effectively and does a good job rebounding the ball for a guard.
Luke Nusbaum, 6’0, PG, 2018, St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.) OWN Spurs
Nusbaum impressed in June with his high school team where he will be taking on a much bigger role after Aquinas lost a significant amount of talent to graduation. Nusbaum is a terrific competitor who combines good speed and quickness with the ability to make plays and knock down shots. Definitely a player for NAIA and maybe even D2s to keep an eye on this season.
Carlos Paez, 6’0, PG, 2018, Sunrise (Kan.) MoKan Select
A playmaking point guard, Paez has put together a terrific summer competing for MoKan Select 17U squad, a team that features several talented performers who have raised their stock this summer. He has drawn interest from several college programs, including NAIA and D2 colleges.
