2019 July Stock Risers
What 2019 prospects had big July’s and elevated their stock in our eyes? We give you 10 prospects that really helped themselves with their play when we saw them during the live periods.
PG Donavan Moore (Illinois Irish – West Bloomfield, MI)
Ok technically Moore isn’t going to be in Illinois next year, but we have to mention this budding star! The 6’3” combo guard is quickly becoming a high major recruit. He is from Hillsboro, but will be moving to Michigan to play his final two years of high school ball. If Moore was still in the state he could make an argument for the #3 spot overall in the class. He is a dynamic lefty that gets to the rim whenever he wants with his speed and explosive first step. Jump shot became much more consistent in July as did his feel for the game. In our eyes he is a high-major player.
PG Artese Stapleton (Young & Reckless – Kenwood)
Stapleton was very good in the spring and definitely was a prospect that we saw as having D1 potential. He blew it up in July especially at the Sunflower Showcase the last weekend of the month. His speed was absolutely unguardable off the bounce. He got literally wherever he wanted to both score and dish. Solid three point shooter. Stapleton has tremendous court vision in the half court finding his teammates. Mid-major and low-majors should start monitoring him.
PG Traevon Brown (Illinois Stars – West Aurora)
Brown looked comfortable playing in the Stars guard oriented offense. The West Aurora transfer’s game is built on his speed and playmaking ability. He pushes the ball up the floor great blowing past defenders and loves to get to the rim for scores. Liked the progress we saw out of Brown in July and look forward to tracking him more this year with his new West Aurora squad.
PG Treyvon Calvin (Illinois Stars – St. Viator)
Calvin is a quick twitched point guard from St. Viator that made plays for the Stars throughout the month. He is shifty with the ball getting in and out of traffic and has the confidence to drill jump shots at a consistent clip. Good pull up shooter that can stretch that out to beyond the arc.
SG Justin Eagins (Kessel Heat – Downers Grove South)
Eagins is a 6’2” lefty shooting guard that shows combo type potential. He is an angular guard that is best shooting it from three. What he really excels at is drilling shots behind screens when playing off ball screens. Shot it at an exceptional clip doing that in July. As a passer he showed growth throughout the month especially in the pick and roll finding guys cutting to the basket. Eagins has low-major potential. Right now more of a D2 guy.
SG Wes Hooker (Kessel Heat – Downers Grove South)
Hooker is Eagins running mate on the wing for Kessel Heat. He is also 6’2”, but is built more like a truck with a physical body. Hooker does most of his damage around the hoop. Dominant offensive rebounder for a player his size. Powerful scoring in the lane. Flashed a jump shot, but it wasn’t consistent yet. Should be a good small college player.
SF Keenan Jones (Young & Reckless – Whitney Young)
Jones is a prospect that is going to breakout on the high school scene this year for the Dolphins. The 6’5” small forward has 3 and D potential. He is a long and lanky wing that can really shoot it spotting up from the wings and corners. Also slashes well and finishes in transition. Really like the potential he brings to the table on defensive end with his length and anticipation.
SF Ethan Helwig (Illinois Stars – Metea Valley)
Helwig had a monster month! He is a skilled 6’4” small forward that can score at all three levels. Early in the month when we evaluated him it was mostly using his long strides to get to the rim both in the half court and transition. As the month went on it was apparent his true strength as an offensive player was his perimeter shot. Helwig drilled jumpers all over the floor from both mid-range and three throughout the month squarely putting himself on the D1 radar.
PF CJ Wilbourn (Quad City Elite – Normal Community)
Wilbourn is a 6’6” four man that has a great frame with broad shoulders, strength, and mobility. He seemed to play with a higher motor which translated into more production. He was good rebounding around the hoop playing physical on the block. Also flashed some post moves that showed growth in that area. Prospect we will be tracking closely over the next 12 months.
PF Charlie Hoehne (Made Men – OPRF)
Hoehne played well in multiple different events that we saw him. The 6’6” four man from OPRF is a mobile power forward that runs the floor with fluidity. Gets several points a game just running the floor hard. On the block he has a soft touch around the paint with quick post moves. Can face up a little hitting a mid-range jumper and attacking with a couple dribbles. Defensively showed well protecting the rim and getting in passing lanes. Low-major/D2 prospect.
